Christine of Denmark

Christine of Denmark , born in Nyborg in November 1521, died with Tortona the December 10th 1590, was girl of Christian II, king de Danemark and of Isabelle de Habsbourg

She married in first weddings with Milan the May 4th 1534 cacochymic the François II Sforza (14951535), duke of Milan, but did not have children.

Niece of Charles Quint, it was married with Brussels the July 10th 1541 with François Ier (1517 † 1545), duke of Lorraine and of Bar, in order to ensure Lorraine a balance between the France and the Empire and to allow the duke of Lorraine to continue her policy of neutrality. They had:

  • Charles III of Lorraine (1543 † 1608)
  • Renee (1544 † 1602), married in 1568 with Guillaume V of Wittelsbach, duke of Bavaria (1548 † 1626)
  • Dorothée (1545 † 1621), married:
  • # in 1575 with Eric II († 1584), duke of Brunswig-Kalenberg,
  • # then in 1597 in Marc de Rye of the Fen († 1598), marquis de Varambon, count of the Rock and Villersexel

Her husband died in June 1545 and their son was only two years old. After having shared regency with his/her brother-in-law Nicolas of Lorraine, the States of Lorraine allowed him in November 1545 to exert only regency. It adopted a policy favorable to the Empire, in spite of the opposition of the Lorraine barons and of Nicolas of Lorraine, while seeking to maintain neutrality Lorraine. Vis-a-vis in France, it made strengthen in 1548 Mothe-in-Bassigny. It also created in 1549 the Room of Finances, which cleanses the financial position of the duchy.

In 1550, the war began again between Charles Quint and the king de France Henri II, which took in 1552 the Three bishoprices. The April 15th 1552, Henri II goes to Nancy, it relieves the regent, replaces it by francophile the Nicolas of Lorraine and takes along the young person Charles III to continue his education in France.

Christine withdrew herself in her ground of Blâmont, which it had received in douaire, then with Brussels and in Bavaria. She will return to Lorraine only in 1560, when his/her son Charles III, become major, points out it. She will claim with the throne of Denmark and will be entitled queen of Denmark of 1563 with 1569. In 1578, it is withdrawn with Tortona, where it will finish its days.
