Biography
Christian Pineau , born the October 14th 1904 with Chaumont-in-Bassigny (Haute-Marne), dead the April 5th 1995 in Paris, was a Politician French.
Bachelor of law and graduate in political sciences, he worked with the Banque de France of 1926 to 1928, then with the Banque of Paris and the Netherlands. He militated with the CGT in the years 1930 and became a close relation of Leon Jouhaux. From 1936 to 1939, he was assistant secretary of the Federation of the bank clerks, and secretary of the economic council of CGT in 1938-1939.
At the beginning of the war, it was named principal private secretary of Jean Giraudoux, police chief with information.
Resisting, it was one of the founders of the Northern movement Libération as of October 1940. He was member of the socialist committee of action, set up by Daniel Mayer to impel the réistance within SFIO. He went to London in 1942 and rejoined De Gaulle (while being skeptic on the republican convictions of the General). He was at the origin of the Declaration of the de Gaulle general to the resistance movements, published on June 3rd, 1942 by the clandestine newspaper Libération . He founded the networks Phalanx and Cohors-Asturies, with Jean Cavaillès. Returned in London on January 15th, 1943, he pled for a unification of the resistance movements and political parties, which will be indeed the National council of Resistance. Of return in France, it was stopped by the Gestapo in May 1943 and deportee with the camp of Buchenwald.
After the release, Pineau was appointed socialist the Sarthe of 1945 to 1958.
After behaving already been several times minister and in order to solve the governmental crisis succeeding the fall of the Government Pierre Mendès France, it was indicated like President of the Council ministers and constituted in February 1955 a government which was not invested by the National Assembly, collecting only 268 votes against 312.
From February 1956 in May 1958, he was Foreign Minister and took part in the implementation of the forwarding of Suez. He negotiated the the Treaty of Rome creating the European Economic community which he signed with Maurice Faure in the name of France. He tried an opening towards the East while going to Moscow with the president of the Council Guy Mollet. Christian Pineau was all his life a lawyer convinced of European integration.
This Companion of the Release is buried with the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise in Paris.
