Course and work

Specialist in education and the Sociology of work, he is professor of Sociologie to the department of social sciences of the National university (Ulm) and researcher with the Center Maurice Halbwachs (CNRS/EHESS/ENS). Former student of the National university of the street of Ulm (1960-1964), it is aggregate Traditional Letters and doctor of sociology.

He published, often in collaboration with Roger Establet, a certain number of works which made date: the capitalist school in France (Maspero, 1971), the level assembles (Threshold, 1989), Allez the girls (Threshold, 1992).

In the first part of its career, it is close to the philosophy althussérienne. Its work is registered, at the beginning, in the Marxist intellectual landscape of the Sixties and seventies. Its first work in Sociologie of education allowed, with the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-Claude Passeron ( the heirs , 1964; the reproduction , 1970), to make burst at the great day the social inequalities reproduced by the school system.

From 1968 to 1989, he is Professor with the National school of the statistics and the economic administration (ENSAE). He contributes to diffuse the sociological culture near the future investigating statisticians of INSEE but especially to build the reflexive approach and the theoretical bases of the production of the French public statistics.

In the second part of its work, the Marxist ideology is done less present and leaves the place to a sociology more durkheimienne of fight against the prenotions: the level assembles (with Roger Establet, Seuil, 1989), And yet, they read… (with Marie Cartier and Christine Detrez, Threshold, 1999), Suicide. The back of our world (with Roger Establet, Threshold, 2006).
