Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg (1798-1869)

Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg , (in German Christian August von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg), born the July 19th 1798 with Copenhagen, deceased the March 11th 1869 with Schleswig.

He was duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg 1814 with 1869 and duke of the Schleswig-Holstein.

Marriage and descent

In 1820, Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg married Louise Sophie Danneskjold-Samsøe (1797 - 1867), (girl of the count Christian Danneskjold-Samsøe)

Five children were born from this union:

  • Henriette de Schleswig-Holstein-Sondebourg-Augustenbourg (1833 - 1917), in 1872, it married Frederic von Esmarch (1823 - 1908).

Biography

Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg was favorable to the emancipation of the duchies of Schleswig - Holstein. Its objective was to link the two duchies, to proclaim a constitution and to go up on the throne. Descendant of Frederic V of Denmark, it also asserted the Danish throne.

Of 1831 with to 1836, he was member of the general administration of Schleswig. During the year 1846, it protested against the " letter ouverte" of the king Christian VIII of Denmark, this open letter concerned its resignation of its mandate of the general administration. During the year 1848, it was elected appointed Prussian National Assembly. In 1848 and 1849, Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg supported the movement of independence in the duchies. It went to Prussia in order to obtain the support of the Prussia in the assertion of its rights on Schleswig and Holstein. The declaration of war between the Denmark followed and the the Schleswig-Holstein in 1848, this war also implied the Prussia and the Sweden. European powers to link itself to prevent the dismemberment of the Schleswig-Holstein by Denmark. Nicolas Ier of Russia speaking as chief of the elder branch of Schleswig (Holstein-Gottorp) regarded Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg as a rebel. By the treaties of 1767 and 1773, the Russia guarantees Schleswig in Denmark.

The treaty of London between Denmark and Prussia was signed the July 2nd 1850, the two parts preserved their former rights. Denmark was satisfied by the treaty which restored the Danish royal capacity in Holstein with or without the assent of the German Confédération. Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg was évincé, the Danish soldiers are reflected moving in order to force revolted duchies of Schleswig and Holstein to accept the authority of the Danish royal capacity.

After the war of the Schleswig-Holstein (1848 - 1851) and the Olmützer Punktation (treated of Olomouc the November 29th 1850), Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg was exiled.

The March 31st 1852, the question of the succession in the duchy of Augustenbourg was posed, but an agreement between the great powers was impossible.

March 31st, 1852, Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg sold his rights on the duchies of the Schleswig-Holstein to the Denmark. He lived with Primkenau in Low-Silesia.

Genealogy

Christian Auguste de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg-Augustenbourg belongs to the first branch of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbourg, this line is resulting from the first branch of the Maison of Oldenbourg. it died out in 1931 with the death of Albert of the Schleswig-Holstein.
