Chris Potter (saxophonist)

Chris Potter is a Saxophoniste, Clarinettiste, Flûtiste of American jazz, born on January 1st, 1971 with Chicago, Illinois.

Chris Potter passed the majority of its childhood to Columbia (South Carolina), South Carolina, where his/her mother taught psychology with the Université of South Carolina. It very early showed a strong interest for the music, and became a child prodigy, controlling the Guitare, the Piano, the battery, to turn definitively to the Saxophone.

Chris Potter played as a professional musician as of his 13 years, and acquired a local notoriety quickly. It will study with The New School then with the Manhattan School off Music, with New York.

Potter carried out a great number of albums as a leader and even more as a Sideman, playing with musicians like Kenny Werner, Red Rodney, Marian McPartland, the Mingus Big Band, Paul Motian, Ray Brown, Jim Hall, James Moody, Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano, Mike Mainieri, Steve Swallow, Steely daN, Dave Holland, Joanne Brackeen, the musicians of its groups include people like Wayne Krantz, Kevin Hays, Craig Taborn, Bill Stewart, Brian Blade

Its album of 1998 Vertigo was classified as being one of the signal ten albums of jazz of the year by the magazine Jazziz and the The NewYork Times . It was nominated for the Grammy Award for the best solo of jazz for its work with Joanne Brackeen on its album Pink Elephant Magic .

Although it turned much with all the whole of Dave Holland, Potter did not cease traversing the world with its own groups from the exit of Gratitude at the beginning of 2001.

He is the only musician twice has to have gained Jazzpar Price, the prestigious contest of writing and recording of impromptu musics Scandinavian, once as a sideman with Jim Hall in 1998, then two years later under his name.

Musician now recognized as being one of the most talented saxophonists of his generation, Chris Potter is a virtuoso, an improviser born.

He played much of viola at the beginning of his discography but concentrates from now on on the tenor and the soprano.

Chris Potter plays on a saxophone tenor Selmer Balanced Action silver plated 34xxx of 1947 which belonged to Michael Brecker (and which is in does of them one of first Super Balanced Action). He plays a nozzle Otto link vintage Florida 7*, and sheers Rico Jazz 5.

Although it seems to have adopted this instrument, it has of them others, of which a Balanced tenor silver plated 33xxx, and one saw it with an Idiot a few years ago, and it has cheek one mark VI 86xxx on his first albums. He exploits a day before low clarinet Selmer of the Twenties, and has an viola Selmer Mark VI with a selmer soloist vintage. He plays a soprano varnished Selmer series III, with a selmer soloist vintage, and sheers 3.
