Choumen

Choumen (in Bulgarian: Шумeн ) is a city of the North-East of the Bulgaria, Chef-lieu of the oblast of Choumen and, within this one, of the obchtina of Choumen.

It is sometimes made use, in French, of the transliteration “Shumen”, copied on the denomination used in English. One finds, in the old texts, the name of Choumla .

The city was already important with the Moyen-âge as its fortress testifies some, but in fact the Turks intensified the development of Choumla , name which they had given to the city. Renamed Shumen thereafter, town planning continued there in several styles, of which that of the communist period which for once was not fatal by structuring the town of good manners. In parallel, Shumen and centers it Othoman civilization of the area, and the city where live the greatest number of Moslems of all Bulgaria.

Between 1950 and 1965, Choumen was called Kolarovgrad .

The city counts a population of 86.774 inhabitants (2004) including more than Turkish-speaking 20% of .
