Chongming

The county of Chongming (崇明县; Pinyin: Chóngmíng Xiàn ) is an administrative subdivision of the autonomous municipality of Shanghai in China. It includes/understands three islands: the island of Chongming (崇明岛; Pinyin: Chóngmíng Dǎo ), third larger island of China, and two smaller: the island of Changxing and the island of Hengsha. Its surface is of: 1041.38  km ².

The island of Chongming is an alluvial island which emerged in 618 in the mouth of the river Chang Jiang ( Yangzi ). It was formerly the most rural area of Shanghai. Since the construction of the tunnel under the river, it accommodates crowd of researchers of Or. It is also a site for the migrants of the stopping of the Three Throats as well as the site of the forest park of Chongming.

At its Eastern end, the island must accommodate Dongtan, the first “ecological city” of the world. Dongtan should count between: 50000 and: 80000 inhabitants in 2010, then: 500000 in 2050.

Demography

The population of the county was of: 663255 inhabitants in 1999.
