Chomelix is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Loire and the area Auvergne.

History

Chomelix comes from Latin " Chalmelis" who means " way of the eaux" , typical characteristic of the commune, crossed by several small Brook X and by two River S: the Arzon and the Chamalière and where the source S are numerous.

Some vestiges of the time Mégalithique (Menhir of Monteil) and of the Roman epoch (milliary of the Bolène ways and the Way of César, Pottery S, jewel X, Currency S…) attest of a life on the commune since highest Antiquité.

The Moyen-âge was particularly rich. Four important Château X were built with 11th and 12th centuries: Chomelix Top, completely destroyed today, Chomelix the Bottom, of which there remain the vestiges of a tower, Sereys, several times destroyed and altered and Arzon whose imposing ruins dominate the brook Arzon.

During very a long time, Chomelix the Top and Chomelix Bottom were villages strengthened, independent,… and even enemies. In attests the disastrous Guerre S that delivered on several occasions the lords of Chomelix the Top and Bottom.

The Prieuré of Chomelix was a long time depend on the Abbaye of Chair-God. Until 1374, two Moine S reside there then, not being able more to provide their functions for lack of means (strong mortality, wars), they regain the head office. In 1643, the priory is directly attached to Chair-God. Currently, an association gathering all the Casadéens sites in Europe was born, with an aim of promoting the tourist development and cultural of these sites.

Chomelix was a long time a point of passage of the Pilgrim S of Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle in direction of the Puy-en-Velay coming from the east, to join the Via Podiensis. In two attest scallops which decorate the walls of the church as well as the registers of the Hôpital.
