Geography

The commune of Choisy is at an altitude of 611 meters to the town hall. It is the widest commune of the canton. It is stretched between main road 508, with the west and main road 201, in the east, between the road of Paris and the road of Geneva, to 15 km in the north of Annecy. With a situation of Piedmont, directed in the west, the soil is a succession of grassy hills, culminating in south-east with 905 meters (the Montagne of Mandallaz). The point low (350 m) is at the junction of the brook of the Labels and small Usses.

The rural landscape of hills explains the great number of hamlets (23).
Many hamlets bear the name of the families which lived in these places in the past. For example: " At Basset" , " At Balleydier" , " At Roullin" , " At Perroud" , " At Berthoud" , " At Papet".

History

The ancient presence is affirmed by the discovery of a tomb to the hamlet of Rossy. The village of Choisy belongs to the Seigniory of Vulpillière, which passes to XIIIe century to the family of the lords of Compey for which the count Gérold of Geneva built the Château of Thorens - their principal stronghold - in the current village of Thorens-Glières.

In 1533, the seigniory is allocated to the count of Geneva, which gives the administration of it to Jacques de Dalmaz, before selling it, in 1568 with Louis Reydet, who makes build the castle of Choisy. The descendants of this first lord of Balme take the title of Reydet of Vulpillière.

In 1605, Choisy counts 86 fires. Of Reydet also make build a castle with Rossy.

The day before the French revolution, Choisy counts 583 Bovets (bulls), which one also call lô trin-Na-paco allusion probably to the mud of the courses of farms. The parish of the hamlet of Véry, placed under the term of Julien Saint, dependant on Choisy is removed by the legal settlement of 1801. Choisy keeps the parish of the chief town, dedicated to Saint Benoit.

In 1880, one rebuilds the church in the neo-gothic style, while preserving the chorus of XVe century and part of the bell-tower, because the population exceeds the thousand hearts (1054 in 1891). Consequently Choisyliens are less and less numerous. The cultivation of cereals and the dairy breeding are of a good output. The commune has three Fruitière S, one with the chief town, and two in the hamlets of Charave and Buaz. The Fruit-bearing S of the chief town and Buaz amalgamated in 1980, and joined that of Cercier.

Culture and Inheritance

Heraldic

The general screen of the blazon is consisted the weapons of the family of Reydet, Seigneurs of Choisy: it is more precisely the field of azure (blue bottom) crossed by the gold fasce (horizontal band).

But the two gold stars (as a chief) of the weapons of Reydet are replaced here by two turns of the same metal, so as to symbolize the two castles preserved by the commune. In the same way, a money fox occupies the place of the money crescent of the weapons of this family, thus evoking the name of oldest of these two castles: Vulpillère (Latin Vulpes: fox).

In external ornament, a high sword (i.e. the point turned upwards) posed out of stake (vertically) behind the ecu recalls the discovery of an iron sword made to the hamlet of Rossy in 1891.

The heraldic description of the blazon is the following one:

Of azure to the gold fasce accompanied by two turns by same as a chief and a money fox at a peak. Support: a high sword with the naturalness out of stake behind the ecu.

The school of Choisy

It was built of 1862 with 1865, the project dated April 11th 1861. Previously there existed “houses of school” with rooms, often at the private individuals. The school was made by the regent (often the priest of the village) the school was not free. There was a tax called “minerval” which varied according to the richness of the families. In the beginning, the school of 1865 counted in all and for all 2 classes, and the town hall was under the same roof.

Demography

Announced in 1365 as a borough of 60 fires (more than 300 people) Choisy extinguished 86 fires in 1605, 436 inhabitants in 1773, 720 in 1822, 969 in 1838, 1029 in 1872, 1054 in 1891. One notes a regression in 1901: 824 inhabitants who become 815 in 1911. The 42 children of Choisy fallen during war 14-18 constitute a bleeding difficult to compensate. In 1921, 683 inhabitants, in 1931, 648 inhabitants. The attraction of the cities will depopulate Choisy: 620 inhabitants in 1946, 592 in 1954, 570 in 1962, 524 in 1968.

The improvement of the highway network will start the increase as of 1975: 551 inhabitants. In two years, 1976 and 1977, will be built nearly 50 dwellings. In three years, 1978, 1979 and 1980, will be added 48 more constructions. Starting from 1981, the crisis making more hazardous individual construction, the increase in the rate of the loans, the cost of the fuels bringing the habitat closer to the places of employment, slowed down this progression.

The census of 1982 gives a report on 767 inhabitants. A complementary census in 1985 gives a report on 903 inhabitants.

On the 767 inhabitants of 1982 one notes 401 men and 336 women, 273 less than 20 years, 73 from 20 to 29 years, 156 from 30 to 39 years, 168 from 40 to 59 years and 97 of more than 60 years.

On 573 credits, 301 men and 272 women, 8 applicants for work (2 men, 6 women), 68 students. On 334 credits (102 nonpaid and 232 paid), 59 have the agricultural statute and 275 are not farmers, always on 334,126 resident and work with Choisy, 208 resident in Choisy and are employed elsewhere.

In 1990 the population retained by the census is of 1070 inhabitants, that is to say an increase of almost 40% since 1982. One notes an evolution of 94% in 15 years, i.e. in 1990 Choisylien on two is “new”, the common one found its population of 150 years ago.

The population of 1990 segments as follows: on 1070 inhabitants, one notes 565 men, 505 women and 495 credits. On the 495 credits, 401 is paid, 94 are nonpaid. It is necessary to also note: 25 applicants for work (7 men, 18 women) 17 apprentices or training course and 113 reprocessed. At the dawn of XXIe Choisy century, historical records beat. The census of 1999 gives a report on 1384 inhabitants. To this population, one can add the secondary residents, 32, which changes the number of inhabitants to 1416, but it is the figure of 1384 which must be retained officially. The examination of the figures reveals an increase of 150% in 30 years and nearly two Choisyliens out of three are the new ones arrived since 1968.
