Chocolate (clown)
Chocolate , nickname of Rafael Padilla, Clown born with Cuba in 1868 and deceased with Bordeaux on November 4th, 1917.
Orphan, Padilla was sold like servant to an European. Tony Grice, celebrates it white clown, discovered it vegetating on the quays of Bilbao. He made of it his partner in some of his numbers. Called Chocolate, it was initially pointed out in a number where it overlapped an unverifiable mule, always ending up expelling it out of the track.
It made then team during a score of year with Footit. Both were a great success by imposing a comic duet between an authoritative white clown and a black Auguste scapegoat. The expression “I am Chocolat”, meaning “I am Bern”, was popularized by the dialogs of their number.
Their common career knew his apogee with the Madness-Shepherdess, in 1905. They separated in 1910, to continue each one, without much success, a career in solo. His/her son, Eugene Grimaldi, known as Chocolate wire, obtained a certain success as white clown in the Twenties.
Deceased in 1917, Rafael Padilla is buried with the cemetery of Bordeaux.
