In Phonetic, a consonant spirante , or by preoccupation with a concision spirante , is a consonant produced by a moderate bringing together of the phonatory bodies which does not go until producing the noise characteristic of Friction of the Fricative S. They can be subdivided in Semi-consonne S and liquid S, and are almost always voiced.

The spirantes are sometimes called approximating , term clearly showing a r' approche' lies of the phonatory bodies not going until constriction.

List spirantes of the API

Spirantes central

  • Bilabial: β̞
  • Labiodental: ʋ

The charter the API one does not propose a symbol for the spirante bilabial, which is annoying since one comes from there to describe (incorrectly) the B of Spanish saber as fricative whereas it is indeed about a spirante; the fricative bilabial is a phoneme in other languages, for example in Estonian.

The API one proposes however a sign Diacritique making it possible to mean that symbol of fricative must be read like a spirante of the same joint: = // spirant.
