Located at the southern limit of the department of the Coast-with Or, between Beaune and Seurre, the village of Chivres (21) occupies the first hills which border the valley of the the Saone. Certain variations are besides in this easily flooded plain where the point low of the department is.

History

The village of Chivres shared the fate of the Burgundy. Initially old crossing point with the the Saone which delivered many vestiges Roman or medieval testifying to an important navigation on this North-South axis that constitutes the peaceful easily navigable river, it is also an agricultural place of establishment in the orbit of the great religious fields of the Burgundian Middle Ages like the abbey of Citeaux, the abbey of Nuits-Saint-Georges or the Hospices of Beaune.

The traces of old constructions are locatable in the chorus of the XIIIe of the church Saint-Leger and in the nave of the XVe. many interior ornaments of the XVIe-XIXe centuries (pulpit - murals rules of Leger Saint…) testify to the relative ease of the inhabitants. One locates also the traces of an establishment of a castle which will be rebuilt with XVIIIe like its court and its park then modified (posterior frontage) after 1825.

The village still offers many farms XVIIIe and XIX E centuries, characterized by the use of hardcore, brick, wood sides associated with cob and covered - seem-T-it - at the beginning with thatch, and today with tiles punts. They organize around a court, home, cattle sheds, stables and given, possibly dovecote, baker's oven, well…

The beginning of the XIXe century will also see construction, close to the church and opposite the castle, the building intended to shelter the Mairie and the school. A little later, one will build small oratorical S out of brick at each end of the village as the Saint-Leger vault which carries the date of 1853.

Economy

Its agricultural activity is important and in evolution: the potato produced before 1940 for the starch works of the surroundings and the vine still cultivated at the beginning of the 20th century left the place with the breeding of the bovine of fattening of race charolaise (activity in regression since ten years) and to the intensive production of cereals (corn - corn - sunflower - colza). A railway of the network PLM connecting Gray to Châlon-sur-saône was built in the plain at the end of the 19th century with a small station tranformée today in particular house.

Important work of fill was necessary to put the way out of water at the time of the risings of the Saone (most memorable remaining that of 1955) which it was necessary to span by a metallic bridge known as bridge of one hundred meters .

This investment justified the transformation of this railway on the way departmental when the rail link was displaced in the Années 1960.

In addition the country holidays develops little by little in Chivres (21) with rural second home, lodgings and the installation of the path of the Roe-deer which makes it possible to discover the fields and the forest whereas other ways traverse the plain to the Saone. (see external bond)
