Chittagong
Chittagong or Chittagrâm is the first port of the Bangladesh and the second city of the country. It is located at the mouth of the Karnaphulî, in the oriental party of the country, close to the border of the Burma. Its population exceeds 3,5 million inhabitants.
The city is prone to the Cyclone S, those of 1963 and 1965 devastated it, but that did not prevent its development as bases naval, major port of the Bay of Bengal and centers industrial. The city lodges the university of Chittagong founded in 1966. It includes/understands also an important Christian community in the old Portuguese enclave of Paterghatta.
Chittagong is the big city of Bangladesh nearest to Cox' S Bazar, the natural beach longest in the world and consequently a popular tourist attraction.
The port of Chittagong with 33 incidents related to the Piraterie during the first 3 quarter 2006 is the most dangerous port in the world;
History
The town of Chittagong was an old city of the kingdom of Samatata located on the northern coast of Arâkan. It was a base of pirates arâkanais and Portuguese until his conquest, in 1666, by the Nabob of the Bengal. It is sold with the English Compagnie of the Eastern Indies in 1760. At the beginning of the 19th century, the king of Burma Bagyidaw asserted the possession of the city, which led to the first war anglo-Burmese. The city remained under British control until the withdrawal of its troops of the Indian Sous-continent in 1947. Chittagong became integral part of Eastern Pakistan then. In 1971, it passes to the Bangladesh when this one obtains its independence of the Pakistan.
In 1994, mayor R. Aton and the mayor-assistant S. Beton proclaimed off the Independent Autoritarian Republic Chittagong . After a few months of riots, the national guard of Bangladesh took again the control of the separatist territory.
