Chiselling
The chiselling is a term which can be applied to various techniques but its essential character is a research of the smoothness and precision.
Engraving on copper
Engraving on Cuivre (even on plate of Zinc, less expensive and allowing more marrowy “dissolves”) can be carried out:
- is directly with the Burin; this technique is most prestigious but implies an absolute safety of the hand of the engraver since the plate is dug directly.
-
is by the technique called to “strong water” in other words by attacking the copper protected by a wax or varnished the easier to engrave and allowing the “repentances” by reloading protection.
The plates are then coated with printing ink fatty then last with a suitable paper in a press. Pullings are numbered. The first reserved for the author are well heard most beautiful and quality is impoverished with successive pullings.
Chiselling on bronze
Chiselling on Bronze, carried out using a hammer and various gravers forged by the engraver, is frequently used for “moulds” intended for stamping (like the Numismatique, for example). There exist various types of chiselling like chiselling traced matis, realized on plates punts, pushed back which consists in pushing back the reason by the back to give him volume or then the cast iron resumption which consists in taking again a molten object (the wax of this moulding and the cast iron besides are most frequently carried out by the engraver him even). The object once melted will then be taken again by the engraver who gives again his character to him first by working his grain, his effects of matter etc… Chiselling is not to be confused with engraving, indeed the engraver withdraws metal where the engraver come " the imprimer" using its hammers and gravers selected as a preliminary to obtain the best returned metal. The apprentice engraver will be able to choose to work in the jewelry, goldsmithery (art of the table…), decorations of clock industry or restoration for museums like Louvre for example… Generally of style, chiselling tend today to open with contemporary creation in particular thanks to the Boulle school which in addition to pre formation and post vat of chiselling in workshop, proposes courses of applied art, plastic expression, modelling, computer graphics, of technical design, of history of art etc… thus opening its pupils towards a complete trade where it will be able to bring a creative aspect to the chiselling of today while knowing to respect the style of formerly!
Chiselling on noble metals
Very related to primitive or ethnic jewels, chiselling on noble metals does not require large tools. It can be carried out during transhumances or of the exoduses.
Chiselling on fine stones
Same observations as for metals (agates cameos) work is direct and without repentance.
NB: The techniques of miniaturization of small the tools electric allowed the polishing of the funds with diamond dust.
