Chiriquí (province)

Chiriquí is a province of Panama. Its capital is David. The province of Chiriquí is located at the west of Panama. It is surrounded in north by the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Ngöbe-Bugle, in the west by the Costa Rica, in the east by the province of Veraguas, and in the south by the Pacific Ocean. Its surface is of 6 476,2 km ², for a population of 368.790 inhabitants (87 509 hearths) according to the census of the year 2000.

History

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, Chiriquí was populated by a number of tribues indigenous known under the name of guaymies . These tribes included/understood the changuinas, zurias, boquerones, buricas, doraces, bugabas, and gualacas. Chiriquí was discovered for the first time in 1519 stalemate Gaspar de Espinosa. The province was officially created the May 26th 1849, whereas Panama still formed part of the Colombia.

Economy

The saving in Chiriquí is mainly centered on the breeding and the agricultural production, which it exports in the remainder of the country. Moreover, the tourist activity starts to take its rise, as the province becomes a destination for the Panamanian and international tourists.

Climate

The province comprises an important variety of climates. Hot and wet low-grounds close to David, with the fresh and moist plates of Cerro Punta which is regarded as the highest provincial town, only accessible by paved roads.
