Shiraz or Chiraz شیراز is a city of the south-west of the Iran. It is the capital of the province of the Fars. Chiraz was the capital of the Perse under the Dynastie Zand of 1750 until 1794, when the Qajar S moved the capital with Teheran.

Geography

Shirāz is located at the foot of the mounts Zagros with an approximate position of 29° NR, 52° E and an altitude of 1600 Mr. Compared to the close provinces, Yazd and Khuzestan, Shirāz has a climate more moderated, with hot summers with very hot and moderate winters.

Shiraz is accessible by Autoroute from Isfahan and by road since Bushehr or the International airport of Chiraz. A subway is in the course of construction.

Economy

The economic base of the city lies in these provincial products: the Grape, the Citrus fruits S, the Cotton and the Rice. In Shiraz itself, industries such as the production of cement, sugar, manure of textile products, products of wood, metal and the carpets dominate. Shiraz is also a major center of Iran for the electronics industries and has an oil refinery. It is generally thought that the name of the Shiraz type of vine, which became deformed in Syrah, finds its origins here.

History

The name élam ite of the city was written Tiraziš , as attest it the shelves of clay élamites found with Persépolis. Phonetically, that can be interpreted by /tiracis/ or /ciracis/. This name in become/širajiš/as Persan old man, through the changes occurred in time, the name became Shiraz in modern Persan. The name Shiraz also appears on the sceux ones of clay found with Qasr-i Abu Nasr , a ruin sassanide in the east of the city.
