Chioggia is a Italian coastal town, located on an small island, with the southern entry of the Lagune of Venice, in the Plaine of Po and in the north of the Delta of Po, with twenty five kilometers approximately of Venice as the crow flies, that is to say fifty by the road. The historque island and Sottomarina are connected between them and to the coast by bridges.
It constitutes a miniature counterpart of Venice, with some channels, whose main thing is Canale Vena, and of the characteristic narrow streets, the calli. It has also several medieval churches , retraillées for the prosperous period of the 16th century and 17th century, whose principal one, Santa Maria of the 11th century, became a Cathédrale in 1110, then was rebuilt in 1623 by Baldassare Longhena.
In 2002, its population was of 51.800 inhabitants, of which the half approximately on Sottomarina.
At the 14th century, it was the theater of the fight between Venice and Genoa, during the war bearing its name. Thereafter, although autonomous, it was always subordinated to Venice.
The Tourism on Sottomarina, with sixty Hotel S and ten seven Camping S is also one of the main activities of the city.
