Chinese city

The Chinese City () also called external City (of Beijing), is historical quarters of Beijing in Popular republic of China. It extends to the south from the Place Tian' anmen, and includes in particular the Temple of the Sky. The Chinese city with the shape of a rectangle aligned on the cardinal points; it measures approximately eight kilometers of is in west and three kilometers of north in the south. Its walls were cut down in 1958.

It owes its name with the Mongolian established in Beijing at the time of the Dynastie Yuan. They rebuilt the city around the prohibited Cité, the central part of the city surrounded by wall being consequently named Tartar Ville. In the south of this one one second city developed which was coupled for him where the Chinese population of the city, surrounded by other ramparts is established, and which was called Chinese Ville. This part of Beijing sheltered the various diplomatic delegations a long time. It was the object since the Années 1990 of important rebuildings and restorations.

The doors of the Chinese city were the following ones (starting from the place Tian' anmen and in the direction of the needles of a watch):

  • Zhengyangmen (正阳门), carries South;
  • Chongwenmen (崇文门), carries Respect of the letters;
  • Dongbianmen (东便门), carries Eastern Opening;
  • Guangqumen (广渠门) carries Vast ditch;
  • Zuo' anmen (左安门), carries Peace of left;
  • Yongdingmen (永定门), carries eternal Stability;
  • You' anmen (右安门), carries Peace of right-hand side;
  • Guang' anmen (广安门), carries universal Peace;
  • Xibianmen (西便门), carries Western Opening;
  • Xuanwumen (宣武门), carries Proclamation of the martial law.
