Chinese Taipei

Chinese Taipei (Chinese: 中華台北; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Táibĕi , French: “Chinese Taipei”) is the name English used by Taiwan (official name: Republic of China) when it takes part in international organizations because of the not-recognition of this State by the Popular republic of China.

It is for example under this name that the Taiwanese sporting federations take part in the Olympic Games and with the international sporting events, with a Drapeau specific, different from the flag of the Republic of China.

In Chinese, this name is Zhōnghuá Táibĕi (中華台北), “the Chinese Taipei”; but the Popular republic uses Zhōngguó Táibĕi (中国台北), literally “Taipei, China”, placing the island on the same level as the special administrative Régions of HongKong and of Macao called in English, in particular on the postage stamps, “ HongKong, China ” and “ Macau, China ”.
