History

Chilly-Mazarin preserved an inheritance which attests its historical richness. Three castles are succédé on the grounds of Chilly-Mazarin.

Of the two first, there remain nothing. Third, which was built between 1627 and 1632 by Métezeau, remain vestiges: ditches, the bridge, the part of water and its nymphée classified with the inventory of the Historic buildings.

The Hotel-of-City, house middle-class (built in 1822 and altered in 1903) was built on the site of the third castle.

The church Saint-Etienne (XII E and XIII E centuries) altered to the XVII E century, the glances of aqueducts, the hunting lodge of Beautiful-Access and the vestiges of the Castle are principal testimonys of the richness of passed of Chilly-Mazarin. Many personalities had their destiny related to that of Chilly-Mazarin, thus creating bonds which crossed time:

The owner of the seigniory of Chilly was at the beginning of the 17th century Martin Ruzé, lord of Beaulieu , Secretary of State under Henri III, Henri IV and Louis XIII, who had bought this ground at the end of XVIe with Michel Gaillart. Not having had of child, it bequeathed Chilly, as well as the ground of Longjumeau to its great nephew, Antoine Coiffier d' Effiat , by the means of a substitution, in 1609: Antoine d' Effiat inherited Chilly and of Longjumeau but should from now on carry the name and the weapons of its Ruzé great-uncle. Antoine d' Effiat became the effective owner of Chilly with died of Martin Ruzé in 1614.

He made a brilliant career and died in 1632 Marshal of France. His/her Martin son, then its grandson Antoine, succeeded to him in the possession of Chilly. At the beginning of the 18th century, the branch of Coiffier Ruzé d' Effiat died out and their heritage was asserted (wrongly, because according to the terms of the substitution of 1609, Chilly would have to return to other branches of the family Ruzé, the ground being transmitted by the males) by the cousin of the last of Effiat, Armand-Charles of the Door, duke of Meilleraye and Mazarin . This last was the son of the marshal of Meilleraye and a girl of the marshal of Effiat. He had married the niece of Mazarin Hortense Mancini and had become the heir to the cardinal, thus giving rise to the line of the dukes of Mazarin and to the denomination, going back to 1822, of the commune.

One of its downward, Marie-Louise Congratulated on Aumont, duchess of Mazarin, married in 1777, Honore Grimaldi, Prince de Monaco.

Today still, the princes of Monaco carry the title of dukes of Mazarin, Marquis de Chilly.

Because of the historical links existing with the Principality of Monaco, Gerard Funès, mayor of Chilly-Mazarin, took part in June 1997 in the days of the friendship celebrating the 700e birthday of the Grimaldi dynasty.

The day before the French revolution, the inhabitants of Chilly-Mazarin write their registers of grievances on April 4th 1789. For the Revolutionary period, fourteen Mayors follow one another. The Municipal council must reorganize, to face the problems. It is a gushing of initiatives: the inventory of the goods of the nobility and the clergy, the help with poor, the fixing of the limits of the commune with Longjumeau and Wissous, the installation of the culture, grazing ground, market, state highway patrol… The Municipal council plays the role of mediator, of conciliator. He reorganizes teaching and celebrates the patriotic festivals.
