In the beginning, the children of Israel are the twelve wire of Jacob, from which the Twelve Tribes will descend. The Torah calls them sometimes " children of Jacob" , sometimes " children of Israël." After their arrival in the country of Goshen which assigned to them the Pharaon of Egypt, whose their brother Joseph is the Prime Minister, their descendants multiply prodigiously. They also are called " Children of Israël."

According to a Midrash, Jacob is tallest of the three patriarchs, because him only could generate a family of which all the members are virtuous: Abraham gave rise to Isaac and Ismaël which, although having finished its life like a Juste, was expelled of the tent of Abraham because of its bad influence on Isaac; Isaac gave rise to Jacob and Esaü, which became a hunter and sold his right of seniority to his junior. Only Jacob/Israel had wire which, after their internal struggles, emerged like a linked family, all of honest " Wire of Israël".

After the bursting of unified monarchy, the southernmost kingdom was known like the Royaume of Juda, while the septentrional kingdom (which included/understood the territory of ten of the twelve tribes) preserved the name of Royaume of Israel. However, " Israël" also continued to indicate the twelve tribes.

Christianity

Following the rejection of Jesus by the Jews, of many Christians based themselves on the New Testament to declare the " new Israël" or the " Israël" truth; ( verus Israel ) which would have replaced the " Children of Israël". This belief, called the Supersessionisme, was enough widespread to appear in the declaration of faith which the Christian doctor in the Kuzari makes.

Many colonists Européen S of the Nouveau World regarded themselves as the heirs to these old tribes, this is why they named their children and of many cities according to the Bible. This belief is still present in certain Christian movements, like the Église of Jesus-Christ of the Saints of the Last Days.
