He is the son of Chilpéric II.

Biography

Childéric III was the last king of the Francs mérovingien.

To prove the uselessness of the kings mérovingiens, Charles Martel had left vacant the throne after the death of Thierry IV in 737 - all the official documents will be gone back to 737 during the 7 years of vacancy.

Locked up as of 737 with the monastery of Saint-Bertin, in Sithiu (currently Saint-Omer), by the Mayor of the palate Austrasie N, Charles Martel, Childéric is called by Pépin the Brief to reign again in 743. Pip enables him to occupy the throne despoiled by his/her father, to undoubtedly like the aristocracy partisane of the old franque dynasty, because the clergy and several people, which it held in tender, had blamed his legitimacy.

In 750, Pépin sends a franque delegation near the pope Zacharie, to ask for the authorization to him of put an end to the declining reign Mérovingiens, and thus to take the crown in the place of Childéric. What Zacharie accepted by declaring that “that was to be a king which exerted the reality of the capacity”.

In November 751, Pépin deposits Childéric III, then it is made elect king, with the field from May to Soissons, by acclamations of the Leude S, an assembly of bishops and the noble ones. This election occurs, for once, without bloodshed. Childéric III, after being deposited and tonsure (one cuts the long hair to him, signs to be able at the Francs), is locked up again with the monastery of Saint-Bertin, where he will die, undoubtedly in 755. It leaves a son: Thierry, who in his turn tonsure then is locked up.

With the XIX° century, excavations were carried out in what one calls the " saint-Bertin" ruins;. The tomb of Childéric III could not be identified in the cloister where various bones were however found. Norman then the French revolution were right of this burial.
