The chief of the Opposition (English: Leader off the Opposition ) to Canada is generally the Député with the House of Commons of Canada which directs the Honest Opposition of Its Majesty (i.e. the party identified like the Official opposition).

It or it is entitled to the same wages and the same level of protection as a minister of the cabinet, and also has the right to live with the official residence of Stornoway. It or it is also sworn in as a member of the private Council of the Queen for Canada, the only non-governmental deputy with the communes to generally see itself granting this privilege, which can allow the First-minister, in certain circumstances, to inform it on confidential questions of national importance.

There is also a Leader of the Opposition to the Senate, which is usually same party as the chief of the Opposition to the communes. An exception to this rule was the period between 1993 and 2003 when the successive parties forming the Official opposition in room did not have representatives with the Sénat. Since the chief of the Opposition to the communes is usually an head of party, it or it names its counterpart with the Senate. From 1993 to 2003, the Official opposition with the Senate was the Parti progressist-conservative, therefore the chief of the Party progressist-conservative to the communes chose the chief of the Opposition to the Senate.

In theory, the existence of the position of Chief of the opposition of does not depend on the recognition of a Official opposition. Thus, it already arrived in certain Canadian provinces that the principal party of opposition could not qualify like formant a party recognized in room. The post of head of the opposition is then granted all the same to the one of the deputies of the opposition.
