It owed its diminutive with its reputation of seducer: in the beginning, the nickname of “ Chicko ” was indeed a short cut of chicken to drive out (i.e. hunter of pullets in slang of the time). A printer having one day retracted “K” by error, it is finally the orthography Chico which remained, but the pronunciation was always “ Chick-o ”. Those which were unaware of the origin of the diminutive tended to pronounce it “ Cheek-o ” (by lengthening the first syllable) what gave place has comic effects during broadcast radio of the Années 1940. Even in the Years 1950, Groucho intentionally used the bad pronunciation to make word games with the town of Chico.
On scene, Chico Marx always played the stereotyped character of an Italian by using an accent which it preserved in all films of the Marx Brothers. In addition to its role of Italian he plays of the piano, in a nonconventional way, in each film made with his brothers.
