He belongs to the artists having brought a major revival in the Brazilian music, at the sides in particular of Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil: at the end of the Years 1960, they are among the initiators of the kind called Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), resulting from fusion from the styles which surround them as the Bossa nova, the samba, the Jazz or the Rock' roll while being the support of an expression protestor vis-a-vis being able it held by the soldiers.

It is at the 20 years age, in 1964, which it starts to point out, while taking part in concerts of schools. One year later, it leaves its first individual: Pedro pedreiro . Little time after, in 1966, its song has bandaged makes it famous while gaining a first place ex æquo to the TV Records MPB Festival.

However its militancy and its engagement against the Dictature in place at the time him are worth prison. It ends up being exiled in Italy but returns quickly to the country in 1970 and circumvents the Censure after a fashion Brazilian authorities. Thus " Apesar of você" (In spite of You) passes through the meshs of the censure and becomes an anthem against the dictatorship. It creates and composes some of its songs under the pseudonym of Julinho da Adelaide . The majority have a success which is not contradicted with time, and are revealing of its talent: Ground viva , Apesar of você , Sonho of um carnival , Samba of Orly , Bye bye Brazil , Vai passar , etc

In 1989, its song " Essa moça your different " , recorded in 1969, will be used as sound illustration of a Publicité for a mark of soda and will make known it general public.
