Chick Corea
Chick Corea ( Armando Anthony Corea ), born the June 12th 1941 is a pianist of Jazz and jazz-rock'n'roll which was made famous for its work of the years 1970. It belongs to the basket of talents discovered by Miles Davis, cf Bitches Brew . It is also an excellent traditional pianist (it recorded only very few traditional discs). It gained 10 to date Grammy Awards (and be nominated more than 32 times in addition to these victories).
Style
Chick Corea has a style very particular, at the same time very rhythmic and very melody (it has even a first price of academy in clear case). Its play is filled up of a lyricism coloured with a prevalence of the agreements and a great use of the chromatic and decreased ranges. Its phrased (in particular during its solos) is very fast and often reflects its very percussive approach of the music.
It is an immense improviser and a very large guide. He plays primarily of the titles of his composition and hates to remake what he already did before; it is thus an extremely prolific artist (it left more than 100 discs in 30 years, including 9 for the only year 1978!). The artists who influenced it the most are Mozart, Beethoven, but also Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and especially Bud Powell. Its compositions count from now on in the list of the standard modern: Spain, Windows, Matrix, TBC, Sicily, Fiesta, Now He Sings Now He Sobs, etc
Career: historical details
It began its career in the years 1960 with giants of the scene latino like Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo (between 1962 and 1963) or Cal Tjader. He collaborated in the trainings of famous musicians jazz like the trumpet player Blue Mitchell (1964-66), Herbie Mann and Stan Getz (1967). Its first album as a leader of group appears in 1967 ( Tones for Joan' S Bones ). It integrated the group of Miles Davis in 1968, in the place of Herbie Hancock, and remained there between 1968 and 1970. He then discovered the electric piano (in particular the Fender Rhodos), which became for him a true passion. He particularly developed his electric play on albums such as In has Silent Way or Bitches Brew (both of Miles Davis). He founded then his group of avant-garde, Circle (with Dave Holland with low, Anthony Braxton with the saxophone and Barry Altschul with the battery). It is in 1971 qu ' it creates Return to Forever (with the bass player Stanley Clarke), a group which knew two times: rather a Latin jazz at the beginning, then true jazz fusion. The large discs characteristic of each time are Spain and The romantic warrior . It is at that time that it started to use different electricals appliance more and more, the such synthetizers Moog or Minimoog.
When Return to Forever was dissolves in 1975, Chick Corea started to work with Gary Burton, with which it recorded famous duets.
Its career continued, either in piano solo, or in duet with other artists (Herbie Hancock, Bobby Womack, Gary Burton), or in the new groups who it formed successively: The Elektric Band , The Akoustic Band , Origin .
It Co-founded in 1992 the label Stretch Records (which is part from now on of Concord Records ) with the producer Ron Moss which allows him, according to his clean dires, a great artistic freedom. The first artists to have recorded for this label are inter alia Bob Berg, John Patitucci, Eddie Gomez or Robben Ford.
Its album “Corea Concerto” gained the Grammy Award for the best musical arrangement for Spain for Sextet and Orchestra in 2001.
