Chervettes

Chervettes is a common French, located in the department of the Charente-Maritime and the area Poitou-Charentes.

Geography

The commune is localized near the urban pole of Surgères and not far from the poles of Rochefort and Saint-Jean-with Angély.

The territory of the commune of Chervettes presents great slightly corrugated extents oscillating between 20 and 28m height and functioning of only one holding. Except for the ditches, one counts no river made up on the commune.

The commune is strongly marked by an agricultural space composed of great cereal pieces intersected punctually with hedges accompanying the lanes. A policy of replanting of hedges of the woodlands was followed recently. Channels of drainage are visible punctually. It is in this agricultural landscape that fits the hamlets of Chiron and the Roland Stronghold dissimulated behind a whole of raised quickset hedges.

The built structure of the commune is concentrated in the borough, in the north of the territory. It includes/understands 82,5% of the population in 1999. On the remainder of the territory, one counts two hamlets: the Stronghold Roland - Varzay (divided with the commune of Puyrolland) and Chiron.

History

Old wine commune, Chervettes is marked by its old wine properties at closed court. Since the crisis of the Phylloxéra at the end of the 19th century, there does not remain any more on the commune but one very small surface devoted to the vine. The church of the commune, Our-Lady-of-L' Assumption dates from the 15th century. The building kept its level of original ground and one reaches inside the church by three steps. The plan of construction is simple: a single nave arched in cradle lit by four low-size windows and the oculus bored in the frontage. The bedside leans with a former priory, become at the beginning of the 20th century, the town hall of the commune. On the communal territory, the locality Chiron, one sees the vestiges of a windmill dating from the 18th century. At its side, draw up the vestiges of the house of the miller.
