Chenouda III of Alexandria

Its Holiness Chenouda III (born Nazir Gayed Raphaël in the village of Abnoub in Egypt the August 3rd 1923) is the current primacy (Pope and Patriarch) of the orthodoxe Église copte (since the November 14th 1971). It is the 117e successor of Saint Marc on the papal throne of Alexandria.

In addition to the orthography Chenouda , one can meet Chénouda , or Shenouda . The francized form is Chenouté or Chénouté , but it is never employed. The Latin form is Sinuthius .

Biography

Chenouda III was born close from the Cairo in 1923, under the name of Nazir Gayed Rafail. He studied the history and archeology at the University of Cairo and theology with the seminar copte of Cairo, where he will teach. He entered to monastery Al-Sourian (he took then the name of Antonius Al-Souriany). He there was ordered priest in 1955 and, in 1962, was devoted bishop. In 1972, he was elected and established pope of Alexandria and patriarch of the Head office of Saint-Marc. Chenouda III wrote many works of morals, patristisque and ecclesiology.

In 1991, he was elected member of the presidency of the World Council of Churches (Geneva). Chenouda III was indicated in October 2000 prize winner of Price UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh for the promotion of the tolerance and non-violence, on recommendation of an international jury. “The Chenouda Patriarch is a monk who devotes himself to the promotion of the tolerance. We think that the religion is a field where the tolerance must be particularly encouraged because it is often there that it misses more”, had declared the president of this jury, Tanella Boni.

Between September 1981 and 1985, it was assigned with residence with the Monastère Saint-Bishoy.
