Chenab
The Urdu Chenab (, canāb , : چناب, literally: " The moon ( Chen ) River ( ab ) ") is a river formed by the junction of the Chandra and the Bhaga to Tandi, in the Himalayas, the district of Lahul and Spiti in the Himachal Pradesh (India). Its higher course is also known like the Chandrabhaga . It crosses the Jammu and Kashmir towards the plains of the Penjab, where it receives the Jhelum with Trimmu and the Ravi. It is thrown in the Sutlej close to Uch Sharif to form Panjnad or " Five Rivières" (the fifth is the Beas, which is thrown in Sutlej close to Ferozepur, in India). Sutlej is thrown then in the Indus with Mithankot. The overall length of Chenab is approximately 960 kilometers. Its water is allotted to the Pakistan according to the terms of the Traité of Indus.
The Indians of the vedic period knew the river under the name of Ashkini () or grc-Latn Iskmati and the former Greeks under the name of grc-Latn Acesines . In -325, Alexandre Large the would have founded Alexandria of Indus (today Uch Sharif, Mithankot or Chacharan) to the confluence of Indus and other rivers of Penjab.
Chenab in the same place in the conscience of Penjabis as the Rhine for the German ones or the Danube for the Austrians and Hungarian: it is the iconic river, and she plays a big role in the history of Heer Ranjha, the national epopee penjabie, and in the legend of Sohni Mahiwal. The river was projected in full light because of the will of the Indian government to build hydroelectric stoppings on its course, particularly the project of the power station of Baglihar (envisaged to be completed 2008), within the framework of the Project of the Basin of Indus. These projects on Chenab were disputed by the Pakistan, which affirms that they violate the clauses of the Treaty of Indus, an assertion rejected by India.
