Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen (in Tifinagh: , Arabic: rear RTL ''' شفشاون ''') is a city of the western north of the Morocco blotti with the foot of the jebels Kelaa and Meggou, which form the jebel Ech-Chefchaouen on the chain of the Rif, the city counts 42000 inhabitants, chief town of the province of the same name. It is located at 600 m of altitude. The name of the city means in Berbère " cornes" , Achawen, because of the mountainous tops which dominate and entourennt the city. It was founded in year 876 of the hégire, that is to say in 1471 of the Christian era by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami. Its province, of the same name, counts 440.000 inhabitants approximately, the population density is of 101hab/km ² and the surface of 4350 km ².

History

The foundation of this city had as an aim of protection the population against the Portuguese and Spanish conquest. As of the end of the 15th century, the Arab (Andalusian) driven out Spain which settle there in make a prosperous city, imposing the reclusion to him: the Christians do not have access to the city, under penalty of death. Only the explorer Charles de Foucauld faced the interdict in 1883.

In 1920, the Spaniards seize Chefchaouen and returned it only after the independence of the Morocco, in 1956.

Religion

Chefchaouen is initially a town of religion, it is considéréé like a Holy City in Morocco. It counts an important religious heritage: 20 mosques and oratories, 11 zawiyas and 17 mausoleums; this was worth to him the name of El Madine El Saliha “the Holy City”. The Large Mosque of Chefchaouen “El Masjid El Aadam” was built in 1471/969 of the hégire by the founder of the same city Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami. This mosque was charged, with share the celebration of the worships, the teaching of the social sciences and Islamic to the students coming from all the cities of the Kingdom.

The town of Chefchaouen is located at 600 m of altitude. Precipitations there are most important and vary between 800 and 1.400 mm/an sometimes reaching 2.000 mm/an with snowfalls. - A semi-arid climate which dominates the coastal area with precipitations which vary between 300 and 400 mm/an. - The Southern zone is characterized by a wet climate in winter and dryness in summer with precipitations oscillating between 900 and 1.300 mm/an.
