Checkpoint Charlie

After the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945, the Germany became an occupied country and half-compartment into two: the zone Is under Soviet occupation became GDR, while the Western zone under British occupation , French and American became the FRG. Different the check-points (or checkpoint in English) received code names:

  • Alpha: between FRG and GDR, with Helmstedt
  • Cheer: between GDR and Berlin, with Dreilinden
  • Charlie : between western Berlin and Berlin is .

They were maintained during the Cold war until in 1989. Germany was reunified in 1990.

Checkpoint Charlie was located on Friedrichstraße, at the border between the districts Mitte (in Soviet sector) and Kreuzberg (in American sector). This point of passage was in particular illustrated by novelists who treated espionage like John the Square.
