History

A villa, rural field, can be center of essartage in the immense forest of Gaulle Romaine, would have been had by certain Cavarius or Calavarius.
At the beginning of Xe century, the commune was place chief of a " ager" (canton) of the county lyonnais.
The parish, under the term of saint Jean Baptist, already exists: it belongs to the diocese of Lyon, then depends on Cluny which restores there a priory replaced by a house of secular priests a few years later. At the beginning of the XVII° century, Chaveyriat enters the kingdom of France.
It occupied certainly a place importance in the area, because a market was held régulièrement.
