History

The word Chauvirey is of origin Celtic: it is composed of the syllables chau which means mountain, to vir , which means city, and ey , which means water; the two villages are indeed located on rises, and they are separated by a small river called the Ougeotte.

Chauvirey, located at the borders of the County of Burgundy, near the Champagne and of the Lorraine were the center of an extremely wide ground which included/understood Chauvirey-the-Old, Chauvirey-le-Châtel, Vitrey-on-Mance, Ouge and Betoncourt-on-Mance, and since XVIe century, the Quad.

Chauvirey-the-old was formerly a place much more considerable than it is it today. One found there, at the XIXe century, a great quantity of Roman tiles, and in several places of the human bones. There exist indeed vestiges of a Roman way which went from the Roman camp of Burgundian-the-Morey to Bourbonne-the-Baths and Corre.

Chauvirey-the-old existed before in Chauvirey-le-Châtel, and it took this qualification of the-Old only to the formation of the new village. It is Chauvirey-the-Old which gave its name to the old house of Chauvirey; it is a member of this family which built a new castle around whose the second village was formed, with the designation of le-Châtel .

There were originally in all the ground only two castles, that of Chauvirey-the-Old of which there does not remain any vestige (probably destroyed for lack of maintenance at the end of XIVe century), and that of Chauvirey-le-Châtel, which one indicated since under the name of Castle-Below.

The current castle of Chauvirey-the-Old was built only in the first years of the XVIIIe century. That of Chauvirey-le-Châtel, called the Castle-Below , is older.

Chauvirey-the-old had a church curiale very richly equipped, which passed from time immemorial for oldest from the country; the other villages of the ground had only vicarial Chapelle S . All these chapellenies depended on the diocese of Langres, while the cure of Chauvirey-the-Old belonged to that of Besancon.

A whole dynasty of lords reigned on the " Ground of Chauvirey " , like Stronghold of the count de Bourgogne.

The honorary rights consisted in particular of justice, nomination of the priest of Chauvirey-the-Old, seigneuriaux benches in the churches, nominations in the prayers, places reserved for the processions, burial in the churches, reverence of the new grooms… The sign patibulaire of the high justice, the gibet, was formerly drawn up in front of the " wood of Charaumont ".

The useful rights of the lords included/understood in particular those of hunting, fishes, wood, water, round of applause, guet, Garde, Sergent S, messiers-banvards, stronghold, Mainmorte, For-marriage, échute S, stray S, fines, Scel, lods and sales, selected Dîme S, size S, taxable quota, revenues, breads of salt, mills and communal ovens, Franc-lump, grains, Corvée S of cars, plow, ways, days with the reaping , haymaking, harvest, Pionnage, Wheel and sales with the fairs and the markets….

During centuries, the castles had to undergo the attacks of the various armies which tended to conquer the county of Burgundy, then France, without forgetting the wars of religion.

Chauvirey resisted, in 1475, with the French forces which ordered Georges de Craon.

Chauvirey still resisted, in 1569, as well as the majority of the strong castles of the vicinity, with the invasion of Wolfgang, duke of Bavaria and Double-decker, which, with the head of the Luthérien S of Germany called by the Huguenot S of France, plundered, devastated or burned all that there was in the country of open places and villages without defense. The avant-garde of this army was under the orders of William of Orange, which was assassinated by Balthazar Gerard, born with Vuillafans (Haute-Saône).

But Chauvirey was far from being always also happy in 1641. The castle attacked by Of Hallier immediately after the catch of Jonvelle, was defended valiantly; but it was not less obliged by it to go, and the French made hang the commander of the castle of Chauvirey.

Chauvirey was the first place whose the marshal seized Navailles invading the Franche-Comté at the beginning of the countryside of 1674, which ensured the possession of this province Louis XIV.

With the French revolution, in 1790, the Castle-Top of Chauvirey-le-Châtel and the castle of Chauvirey-the-Old were ransacked and plundered.

At the beginning of 1814, the allied, Austrian troops in particular, occupied during several months all the villages close to the road of Mulhouse in Paris, with military residences and Réquisition Chauvirey-the-Old S. had to support some more than its share, and in particular by the inhabitants of the villages, which plundered the castle.
