History

Founded originally by the chief Cherokee John Ross under the name of “Wharf of Ross” in 1816 to be used as center of exchange with its tribes, it was famous Chattanooga in 1838 after their departure on the “track of the tears”.

During the American Civil War, on November 23rd, 1863 began the battle from Chattanooga III when the forces of the Union led by the general Ulysses S. Grant reinforced the troops which were massed there and counter-attacked the troops of the confederated states. The following day, the battle of the mount “Lookout” was carried out near the city. These movements were followed, next spring, by the countryside of Atlanta which began close to the close border with Georgia then moved towards south-east.

More recently the city received a national recognition for the rebirth of its center and the restoration of the banks of its river. One of the angular stones early of this project, initiated by the mayor Bob Corker, was the restoration of the historical bridge of the street Walnut, which now is the second longer bridge pedestrian after that of the street Shelby, to Nashville in Tennessee.
