History

Birth of the Raoul Castle in 1112 The Town of Chateauroux was preceded in the history by that by Déols. The Gallo-Roman presence is attested there by carved stones, currencies of ceramics, ballot boxes. Towards 937, the lord Raoul the Broad one forsook his palate of Déols, because of the insecurity, or to equip the abbey founded into 917. He made build a fortress on a slope of left bank of Indre. As from 1112, this castle was named “Raoul castle”, because of the frequent first name among lords of Déols. The feudal period saw being born safe from this site strengthened a village from craftsmen and tradesmen.

At the end of the 13th century, the castle was one of the stakes of the fight between king de France and king d' Angleterre. The last lord of the name of Déols had died in 1176 while returning from crusade. The “principality” of Déols, which extended from the Cher to the Gartempe, failed a five year old young girl, Denise, which was carried out in England. In 1188, Philippe Auguste could seize by surprised the Raoul castle, and it had to be waited until 1200 so that a treaty recognized with the king the suzerainty of the ground of Déols. Denise and her husband made a solemn entry in their castle.

Creation of the county of Chateauroux in 1498

The One hundred Year old war brought the insecurity. In 1356, the Prince Noir, wire of king d' Angleterre, not having been able to take the Raoul castle, made burn the city. Plunderings took place in 1374. The city had to be strengthened, which was authorized by the king in 1447. The Raoul castle was rebuilt at that time. The baronnie of Chateauroux became county in 1498, but in 1503 the death of Andre III of Chauvigny occurred.

The succession leads in 1519 to the attribution of the Raoul castle to the House of Maillé, and of the castle of the Park to that of Aumont. The disputes between the heirs ended only in 1612 when Henri de Bourbon, prince de Condé, bought the two batches. He obtained into 1627 that the seigniory was duchy-peerage. His/her son, the Large Cop, hardly dealt with his inheritance, except sending to it his wife under house arrest during twenty-four years. Louis XV acquired the duchy in 1737 and made of it gift in 1743 with the marchioness of Small tower. Madam de Châteauroux died the following year without to have been able to make her solemn entry in her city. The royal administration was beneficial for Chateauroux with creation, in 1751, of the cloth Manufacture (Balsan) and the new road alignment Paris - Toulouse. Walks were created (current places Gambetta and Fayette). Beautiful residences were built.

Chateauroux becomes the chief town of the department

The Revolution made of Chateauroux, which counted 8.000 inhabitants then, the chief town of the department. At the beginning of last century, the resumption of the cloth manufacture and the creation of workshops of the military crews ensured of work a working and military population. In 1847, the railroad arrived, and him a new rise of the city. In 1851, the city counts 15.921 inhabitants. It shaved its walls, its doors and even the keep of the castle and was equipped, with the limits of its granting, of a vast belt of boulevards. It is still well far from occupying all this space and the town hall of 1821, neo-classic also, contemplating Chateauroux of the time to him, turns the back on its city today.

The year 1856 is decisive for two reasons. Chateauroux inaugurates full industrial functions then. A deputy of Indre, the count Eugene de Bryas, obtains the opening of Chateauroux of workshops of cigars which employ eight hundred people as of the following year. In 1872, the population exceeds 18.000 inhabitants. Built of 1858 to 1863, the Manufacture of the Tobaccos counts in 1873,70 frameworks, 82 workmen and… 1.580 workers. The Manufacture of the Tobaccos completed in 1863, the two breweries, the two foundries, of the workshops of clothes industry already made of Chateauroux an industrial town.

An industrialist of Lodève, Pierre Balsan, repurchases the Manufacture of the Park and creates a whole among most important - six hectares of factory - and most modern of the country. Renewing an industry of cloth to the medieval foundations, it equips Chateauroux with its second economic giant and employs eight hundred workmen in 1872. In a town of approximately twenty-five thousand inhabitants, the count Eugene de Bryas employs nearly three thousand people in 1900, Pierre Balsan approximately thousand two hundreds in 1910.

The two last wars precipitated the development of our city. An aircraft factory installed in 1936 in Déols, the creation of 1951 to 1967 of an important American base in Martinerie, involved the construction of cities, residences, houses. Today, the creation of new districts, the installation of zones of leisures, the reorganization of the city, fleurissement, made of Chateauroux a pleasant city, with the height of a Préfecture city.

Economy

Located at two hours of Paris, on a crossroads of the North-South main roads, Chateauroux affirms itself like a turntable of the nation's economy and European. Logistics, the metallurgy and the agroalimentary one are sure values of the local economy. An industrial base reinforced by companies of the air transport, electronic and data-processing air ensure the city castelroussine an economic development in the growth industries.

In addition to many SME and SME, large companies international chose Chateauroux for seat: Harry' S France, the Andre Group, Newell, Hydro Aluminum, Mead Packing, Océ, Montupet…

Tourist monuments, places and culture

  • Castle-Raoul: on the edges of the Indre which it dominates, this castle of the lords of Déols 10th century gave its name to the city. It was rebuilt at the 15th century, and was restored with.
  • the Museum Bertrand: in an old hotel of the 18th century having belonged to the general Bertrand, are Napoleonean collections, memories of the general Desaix, good specimens of Flemish painting of the 17th century, and regional schools of painting and sculpture XIXe-XXe S, of which the sculptor Ernest Nivet.
  • the museum of Arts and Popular Traditions, located in the middle of the Balsan park, gathers collections based on the topic of the culture berrichonne, like on the rural life in Berry. Photographs, engravings, caps, objects in any kind, make reappear the life of the peasants of antan, in the middle of this province of France.
  • the convent of the cordeliers: old convent franciscain of the 13th century, it lodges today part of the school of the Art schools and exposures of contemporary art. Located in the historical part of the city and dominating the valley of Indre, it is a pleasant place of walk.
  • the Saint-Martial church: located at two steps of the Museum Bertrand, the Saint-Martial church is a curiosity of the town of Chateauroux which deserves the turning. Depending on the Saint-Denis parish, it was built at the 12th century. It is a single nave of Romance origin covered with a wood cradle, lit bays tréflées open in a blind arcade of the flat bedside. Its bell-tower of Renaissance style, built by a middle-class man of Chateauroux, Pierre Vurignon, date of the last years of the 15th century. This church hiding place in its walls of the lithographies discovered during renovation work of the furnace bridge in 1960. Located on the left furnace bridge, these lithographies comprise Latin inscriptions carved in Roman characters. To this architecture, is added an artistic treasure dating from the 15th century with scarcities such as statues out of painted wooden, Saint-Denis representative, Saint-Thomas, the Virgin, Jesus… At the 18th century, this church sheltered the Brotherhood of Saint-Blaise who grouped " Tixiers" out of cloth. Formerly, the small place of the Saint-Martial church accommodated fires of Midsummer's Day traditionally.
  • the Saint-Andrew church: in 1876, whereas Berrichons are in mourning (George Sand has just died in Nohant), the town of Chateauroux sees the dedication of the church Saint-Andrew, result of long years of efforts and interruptions of work. Indeed, the idea of the construction goes back to the year 1844 when Mr. Grillon, then mayor of the City, decides the rebuilding of the Saint-Andrew church destroyed at the end of the 17th century. It is in 1845, after a vote of the Municipal council, which work begins. After twenty years of interruption, work begins again in 1869 with a new project of the departmental architect of Indre, Alfred Dauvergne. But, the war of 1870 comes once again to stop work of the Saint-Andrew church. Thus, it is only into 1876 that the building shows its final face in Castelroussins. In spite of average tiny rooms, the Saint-Andrew church is of artistic interest some. Drawings of Isidore Meyer come to supplement the plans of the architect Dauvergne and local industry benefitted from this construction. Indeed, all the interior is built out of granite of the country for the Soubassement S and out of stone of size of the careers of Ambrault for works of rise. The two turns reach sixty meters height. The overall length of the building is of 87 meters and can contain 3000 people. From an architectural point of view, the principal church of Saint-Andrew is of style Gothic.
  • the Notre-Dame church: it was built on the ditch of enclosure of the former Castle-Raoul in 1882. In spite of its unfavorable situation (it was built on a low ground), this building keeps any sound charms with its style inspired of the Romance church of remarkable Issoire and its architectural details. Indeed, of the capitals rise successively and those of the interior represent each one a scene different from the Scriptures (they were carried out by Mr. Girault-Dupin, sculptor in Chateauroux). The Notre-Dame church also comprises a chorus with marble columns and a surmounted cupola of a gilded bronze virgin.
  • the district Saint-Christophe: he contains a generous history and does not cease evolving/moving with the wire of the centuries. This district was dominated a long time by the Benedictine abbey rested by the monks of Saint-Gildas-with-Rhuys in 1127. Alas, this building was demolished and given up. But at the 15th century created for itself an agglomeration around a modest church, which gave again birth with the district Saint-Christophe. Some vestiges of the old Benedictine abbey of Saint-Gildas are to be discovered close to the Dovecote in the street of Fuie or the street of the Plays Saint-Christophe. The district accommodates each year of traditional demonstrations such as the festival of the Vine growers (Saint-Vincent) and the automobile pilgrimage created by the Paviot abbot (legendary figure of the district). This one made carve a monumental statue of Saint-Christophe on the square of the church and placed it above the gate at the beginning of the century. Its successors maintain the pilgrimage automobile but moved it on the Saint-Gildas email.
