Châteaubriant ( Chatiaubriant or Chateauberriant in Gallo and Breton Kastell-Briant in ) is a common French, located in the department of Loire-Atlantique and the area Pays of the Loire. It belongs to the historical Brittany.

The inhabitants of Chateaubriant are called the Castelbriantais and Castelbriantaises .

Geography

Châteaubriant is a medium-sized city which is located in the middle of the great west in the north of the department of the Loire-Atlantique. The city is near large urban poles: to 49 km in the north of Ancenis, 55 km in the south of Rennes, 69 km in the north of Nantes and 73 km in the west of Angers. It was built in a basin in the which master key the river, Expensive the. History

The history of Chateaubriant starts at the beginning of the 11th century when Brient (sent count de Rennes) built a fortress on a mound at the edge of the Expensive one. It founded later the priory Saint-Saver of Béré. A city developed around the castle and was called Châteaubriant.

The fortress belonged to the Marches of Brittany with Vitré, Fougères, border charged to defend the Brittany vis-a-vis the kingdom of France.
