Chassezac

The Chassezac is a French river which takes its source in the department of the Lozere in Mourre of Gardille (1500m) then runs in the Département of Ardeche. It is the principal affluent of the Ardèche, and thus a tributary of a tributary of the the Rhone.

Hydrology

The interannual medium flow or module of Chassezac was observed and calculated during 27 years with Chambonas. It is assembled at 16.4 [[Square meter a second m ³ a second]] for a surface of basin of 507 [[Square kilometer km ²]]. Chassezac is prone to strong irregularities. The river present of the typical seasonal fluctuations of flow of the Cevennes rain mode, with high waters of autumn-winter, prolonged in spring by the rain and snow melt, carrying the average monthly flow on the level from 17 to 25 [[Cubic meter m ³]] from October at May included (with a double maximum, the first in October - January, follow-up of a light fall, and the second in April), followed by a fast fall of the flow leading to one short period of low water level in July - August, involving a fall of the monthly medium flow up to 2.04 m ³ in August. As from September, the recovery is very fast.

The VCN3 can fall until 0.75 m ³, in the event of dry decennial period. The VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

As for the risings, they can be extremely important and particularly devastators. Indeed, the QIX 2 or calculated flow of rising biennial, and the QIX 5 or flow calculated for a quinquennial rising is worth respectively 547 and 883 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is assembled to 1100 m ³, which corresponds to the medium flow of the the Rhone to the downstream of Lyon! As for the QIX 20 and the QIX 50, they are not published, but can only be seriously still higher.

The maximum instantaneous flow recorded with Chambonas for this 27 years period of 1480 m ³ a second, while the maximum daily flow was of 878 m ³ /s. And this rising of 1480 m ³ /s was only of a vicennial nature, i.e. was intended to reproduce more or less every 20 years.

Following the example close rivers Ardeche and Beaume, Chassezac is a very abundant river. The Lame of water past in the catchment area of the river is of 1024 [[Mètre#Description of the submultiples mm]] annually, which is very high, more than three times superior to the French average, all confused basins, and results from abundant precipitations in the area of the the Cevennes. The specific flow (Qsp) is assembled thus at 32.3 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
