Chasseral

The Chasseral is a Sommet the Jura Suisse in the Canton of Bern, culminating with 1607,4 Mètre S of Altitude. It is the third plus high summit of the Swiss Jura, 60 Centimètre S higher than Chasseron. It is the top of more than 1600 meters more in north of the Jura.

Panoramic remarkable, not seen on the the Vosges, the plain of Alsace, part of the Franche-Comté, the Black Forest, the chain of the Jura (French and Swiss) and of the Alps.

Physical characteristics

The two higher links of the solid mass of Chasseral are spread in parallel on more than 15 km, separated by a long depression covered from pastures and smallholdings. The principal edge offers an uninterrupted peak while the septentrional edge is cut by a series of combes and small valleys transverse which open on the small valley of Saint-Imier where the Suze runs. In the south, the solid mass is shouldered by the broad plate of Sharp from where the crumpling isolated from the Sujet mount emerges.

A phenomenon of rather particular material movement occurs on the southern slope of Chasseral. It is about a score of large blocks, isolated from the escarpment which releases them and which walk on on a fall colonized by the grassy vegetation. Their movement is underlined by the tearing of the lawn in parallel furrows, directed in the direction of the slope. The amplitude of displacements varies from 6 to 25 cm per annum and the way traversed by these blocks reaches 20 to 30 Mr.

Station of telecommunications

The first building intended for the telephone calls was inaugurated the June 26th 1945.

From 1954, the station was used by the radiotelephonic service for vehicles.

Since 1970, a provisional house sheltered the transmitters allowing the diffusion of the three Swiss chains of television on the Plate, of Soleure with Yverdon.

The new general-purpose station, built in 1983, comprises a transmitter height: 120 m TV SSR-SRG, managed by Swisscom, diffusing as follows:

  • TNT, channel 56 V since the 27.12.2006, mux containing the TSR 1, TSR 2, SF 1 and TSI 1 (15.8 KW 42 dBw)

  • the TSR 1 channel E22 H BY 12 to 15 KW
  • the TSR 2 channel E59 H BY 12 to 15 KW
These 2 analogical chains were extinct on June 25th, 2007.
  • the SF 1 channel E25 H BY 12 to 15 KW

  • the SF 2 channel E62 H -20dB compared to BY other channels
These 2 analogical chains will be extinct on November 26th, 2007.

This top still shelters an automatic weather station of Météosuisse and a relay for Radioamateur S.

Tourism

The top of Chasseral is accessible by an asphalt road, in the past with toll. Since the beginning of the year 2007, the road at summer repurchased by the canton of Bern. Since this date the passage is not subjected any more to a tax. Many hiking trails also lead to the top.

A chair-lift connected Nods to Chasseral between 1963 and 1993 and served a long ski slope traced in the forest. It was entirely dismounted in 2005. With the foot of the old chair-lift, a ski-lift is always exploited the winter.

A country cottage-restaurant was set up in 1880 and was rebuilt in the form of hotel with restaurant in 1925 after a fire.

The ski station of Bugnenets - Savagnières is located on the septentrional edge at the North-West of the collar of Chasseral. It counts 7 skis-lift for 16 ski slopes alpine (30 km) between 1090 m and 1450 m of altitude. It is also the departure of a basic ski slope of 25 km connected to that of the the Sight-of-Alps.
