Chasch
Chasch (original title: City off the Chasch , then The Chasch in the integral version) is a novel of Science-fiction writes in 1968 by the American Jack Vance and published author in France in 1971. This novel is the first volume of the Cycle of Tschaï.
Argument
Adam Reith, Land, has just failed himself on the Tschaï planet. Whereas his/her companion is made assassinate under his eyes and that its spaceship is towed by Aliens quarrelsome , it is discovered and fact captive by a tribe of hostile barbarians…

Summary
The land vessel Explorator IV is with the research of planet of origin of a message which was sent 200 years ago terrestrial. To the accesses of a planet of a brownish gray, the crew sends a vessel of recognition with two scouts on board. At the moment when the vessel of recognition désarime, the Explorator IV is disintegrated by a shooting come from planet. The vessel of recognition, very damaged, is propelled by the shock wave and enters the atmosphere of planet. Adam Reith and Paul Waunder , the occupants of the shuttle, must be ejected.Unfortunately, the parachute of the second, Paul Waunder, does not open and there remains hung with the fuselage. On his side, Adam Reith lands in a tree with a few meters above the ground. Left the forest, of the Man-Emblems find Paul Waunder and kill it. Suddenly, of the people aliens (of Dirdirs and Chashs) arrive on board strange vessels and seek to seize the land vessel. Dirdirs are put in escape by Chaschs which carries the land vessel. The Man-Emblems return and find Adam Reith, wedged in his tree, a broken clavicle, and override a stretcher in their camping.
After having solved many disagreements with certain members of the tribe, Adam Reith leaves with Traz Onmale , the chief of the tribe, condemned by his pars to die for religious reasons. Adam Reith recovers material on the tree where it had landed and succeeds in locating the site of his space shuttle thanks to his transcom: the indicator indicates the North-West to him. The two assistants leave in direction north, crossing steppes and cities in ruin.
Adam Reith saves the life of a Man-Dirdir in escape, called Ankhe At afram Anacho , which decides to accompany the two men in their search. The singular team arrives soon at Kazabir, the city of the transshipments of commercial caravans. They rent a place on a carriage of the caravan and is on the point of joining the town of Pera. Adam Reith is then struck by the beauty of a young prisoner, Fleur de Cath , sequestered by priestesses of the “female Mystery”. After having helped the beautiful Fleur de Cath, also called Ylin-Ylan, dedicated to the horrible ceremony of the Female Mystery, it joined the caravan, rich person of the several stolen bags of sequins to the priestesses.
Obliged to flee at the time of an attack of Chaschs greens, Reith, Traz, Anacho and Ylin-Ylan take refuge in the ruins of the old city of Pera. But this city is with the hands of Gnashters, of the gangsters, whose chief, Naga Goho , makes remove Fleur de Cath to make his mistress of it. Adam Reith saves once again Ylin-Ylan, punishes Gnashters severely, and harangue the population of Pera so that it takes from now on charges her own destiny with it. Fleur de Cath is offered to Adam Reith.
This last leaves then with the carrier Emmink , member of the caste of the deliverymen, the only human ones authorized to cross the large doors of Dadiche, the main thing astroport of Chaschs blue. Once inside the city, Adam Reith finds his spaceship, but it is dismounted and in the unusable state. As soon as located by of Chaschs blue, Adam Reith hides by masking his odor and finally succeeds in escaping thanks to the intervention from Traz Onmale which came to seek it. On his return, Adam Reith learns that it was named large provost of Pera. He then starts to organize the defense of the city and his political structure. Pera in extremis succeeds in pushing back a massive attack of Chaschs blue. Adam Reith takes again the initiative by taking by storm the alien city of Dadiche. Winner, it demystifies the blue rites of Chaschs and returns to the Men-Chaschs their freedom.
