Chartres-of-Brittany ( Chartr in Gallo, Breton Karnod in ) is a common French, located in the department of the Ille-et-Vilaine and the area Brittany.

Geography

Located in full heart of the basin of Rennes, on a structure of the " type; graben" exit of a collapse miocene, Chartres-of-Brittany is one of the rare Breton communes having of the grounds limestones, in particular Faluns.

This makes of it a completely particular site from the ecological point of view, since in Ille-et-Vilaine the calcicoles plants rare and are primarily concentrated at this place.

There was also presence of lime kilns, which there still is single in High-Brittany. The vehicles which drained this activity brought seeds of southernmost calcicoles plants like the orchises of Lormandiere. The lime kilns represent today an ecological richness and for the industrial inheritance of XIXe and XXe centuries.

Lastly, the clays produced by the deterioration of the rock-mother make of Chartres-of-Brittany a very old site of potteries and more tardily of bricks, activities which ceased in the years 1920.

History

The origin of the name of Chartres-of-Brittany would come from the Gallic tribe of Carnutes which would have been installed on the site

The history of Chartres of Brittany was marked by the presence, as of the Middle Ages, d´artisans potters.

In XIIe and the 13th century, the parish was called Fontenay and probably had as a church the antique vault of the castle of this name. Chartres was a smallholding had by the abbey of Saint-Melaine. The Benedictines had there however a church or vault, whose possession was confirmed to them in 1158 by Jose, archbishop of Turns, in 1170 per Etienne, bishop of Rennes, and in 1185 by the pope Luce III (Cartulaire of the abbey of Saint-Melaine).

The parochial worship was transferred towards the end from the 13th century or at the beginning of the 14th century, in the vault of the Reserve or the Smallholding of Chartres (demolished about 1860) which depended on the Abbey of Saint-Melaine of Rennes. Finally about 1860, the Village of the Pottery, not far from Fontenay, became the parochial and communal center, and accepted the name of Chartres consequently.

In 1920, the name of the commune of Chartres was modified in Charter-of-Brittany.
