History

The name of the village was formerly Carnotance Villare, i.e. “Fields of Carnutes” at the time of Gaulle Romaine. Carnutes, of the Celts, were installed in the area around 500 years before JC, on a territory made up of uncultivated moors, thick forests and marsh which will be cleared with the Moyen-âge “to become a cereal ground”. The word “carnute” gave the adjective “chartain”, from where: Chartainvilliers. The commune of Chartainvilliers historically forms part of the Chartres-native country, in Beauce Chartres-native, very close to the country drouais and the Île-de-France (in the north of the brook of Gas and the Voise).
  • the Terraces

In 1685, Louis XIV, installed in Versailles, wishes that the fountains of the castle function day and night; a project, among so much of others, consists in diverting water of the Eure starting from Pontgouin and to lead them to the various basins feeding the park. Water travels on the level of the ground until Théléville, then it is necessary to cross the valley of the Eure in Maintenon, for that Vauban projects the construction of a 4480 m length aqueduct on three levels of arcades (70 m in height). The declaration of war to the Spain, and misses it money, stop work which will never be resumed. 30.000 men worked on the site, 10.000 died of disease (malaria, scurvy). The Terraces are the testimony of this past.

  • terminals of the chapitre

Six terminals are positioned in limit of Chartainvilliers, Bouglainval and Berchères-Saint-Germain. On some faces, not very readable, are reproduced the weapons of the family of Noailles (mouths with gold band) and on others faces the weapons of the chapter of Chartres (the " chemisette"). These vestiges, of approximately a meter in height, recall the limit of the respective properties.

In addition on the territory of the village a section of the aqueduct of Maintenon passes which was to feed the Château of Versailles out of water.

Personalities related to the commune

The date of 1696 and the armorial bearings of Madam de Maintenon, who are reproduced on the pediment of the church, attest the importance which the friend of the Large King was to bring to this place of worship by rebuilding it.
