Chart ms

The chart ms or Memory card Memory Stick is a removable unit of data storage numerical. It is used for the storage of the numerical stereotypes in the numerical cameras.

It offers a maximum storage of 8  Go (May 2005). Developed by Sony in collaboration with SanDisk, it is especially used by the numerical cameras (APN) of the mark Sony.

This format knew two evolutions, “MemoryStick Duo” of a currently reached a maximum capacity with 8  Go and m2 " MemoryStick Micro" of a currently reached a maximum capacity with 4  Go these two format are designed to support until 32Go in the future…

At the time of the exit of the Portable PlayStation, Sony recommended the use of the “  MemoryStick PRO Duo  ”, posting a flow in reading and writing superior and a capacity active until 8  Go (at the beginning of 2006).

Specifications and physical format

There exist three principal categories of Memory Stick :

  • Memory Stick (50  mm X 21,5  mm X 2.8  mm)

  • Memory Stick Duet (31  mm X 20  mm X 1,6  mm)
  • Memory Stick Micro or m2 (15  mm X 12,5  mm X 1,2  mm)

The capacities of read/write are limited to the neighborhoods of 20  Mbps on the best models (high speed).

Sony made compatible the news Memory Stick with the models of old generation thanks to adapters. It is thus possible to transform Memory Stick Pro Duet into Memory Stick Pro, or to pass from a Memory Stick Micro Memory Stick Pro Duet has.

Logical format

The filesystem used on the medium to store the data is FAT.

The interface Memory Stick Pro generally used functions at 40 MHz with a bus of 4 bits, which offers a speed of transfer of about 20 Mo/s.

There exist several generations of Memory Stick:

  • Memory Stick of first generation, a capacity ranging between 8 and 128 Mo. The apparatuses designed to read these Memory Stick cannot read Memory Stick of following generation, and the capacity donot can exceed 128 Mo. A version equipped with 2 chips of 128 Mo, is a total of 256 Mo (Memory Stick Select) makes it possible to exceed this limitation has 128 Mo, but once the first 128 Mo written, it was necessary to leave Memory Stick and to actuate a small switch in order to pass to the 128 Mo following.
  • Memory Stick of second generation, called Memory Stick Pro, always with the format 50  mm X 21,5  mm X 2.8  mm, they offer in particular a speed of increased writing and a capacity going of 32 Mo with 8 Go. These charts are not readable in the apparatuses of the former generation. Sony also introduces with this format a standard called MagicGate, which offers functions of protction by DRM for the readers MP3 using the fomat Memory Stick like memory support.
  • Memory Stick Pro Duet, which takes again the specifications of Memory Stick Pro, but with the format 31  mm X 20  mm X 1,6  mm, these charts are readable in any reader compatible with the standard Memory Stick Pro, via the use of an adapter.
  • Memory Stick Pro High Speed and Pro Duet High Speed, which take again the specifications of Memory Sticks preceding, and by offering a speed of increased writing, used especially for the cameras having a large resolution. These charts are usable in the readers to the standard Memory Stick Pro
  • Memory Stick Pro Micro or m2, which take again the standard Memory Stick Pro, but with the format 15  mm X 12,5  mm X 1,2  Misters These charts offer capacities of 512Mo, 1 and 2 Go. These charts are readable in any reader compatible with the standard Memory Stick Pro, via the use of an adapter.
  • Memory Stick of third generation, called Memory Stick Pro-HG, standard defined recently by Sony, the first models should appear by August 2007. This new standard offers in particular an increased flow of data of 60 Mo/s, thanks to the doubling of the width of bus (which passes to 8 bits) and an increase in the frequency of operation (60 MHz). The maximum capacity of these charts for the moment is fixed at 32 Go. These charts should exploit the physical format Memory Stick Duet, and will be retro-compatible with all the apparatuses to the standard Memory Stick Pro.
