Culture and inheritance
Civil inheritance
The Castle of Mongaston: Insulated, perched on a hill like a small eyrie, drawn up vis-a-vis the bank souletine of the Season, of which it orders a ford, it belonged obviously, with Labastide-Villefranche and Sauveterre-with-Béarn, with the belt of defense of the Viscount of the Béarn. If it had particular lords, those strengthened it for the service of the sovereign. Although it was strongly altered at the 18th century, it seems to date from the 13th century: this narrow and slim, high strong house of two stages, with four pointed roof and mullioned windows, could indeed quite simply be arranged in the primitive keep, which would go back to Gaston VII. Thus is explained best the watch tower which was with the northern angle, between the second and third levels, and of which remain the base, and an open hole. The beautiful polygonal tower, that one says of the 14th century, in any case was so obviously attached to the remainder of the carcass work heavy castings, which the outdatedness threatens today of in détacher. Some lords of Mongaston are attested in XIVe and the 16th century. In 1658 the castle is acquired by Jean of Peyré, nephew of the captain of the musketeers of Tréville. In 1692 it passes by marriage to Pierre de Casamayor de Gestas, and in 1847 in the famous Xavier de Bachoué de Barraute. Then the family estate abandoned to the insults of the years, sold, and was finally devastated in 1929 by a fire, which found in the roof of shingles a food of choix.
It was not any more whereas one ruin, and one would have strongly surprised the visitors of the time in their saying that these some walls broussailleux and shaking could live again. However, the miracle occurred: with the assistance of voluntary teams, her current owner Mrs. Garnier-Collot, in addition going down from the former lords of the manor, courageously saved it, restored, and ensures some estival animation. One will see a collection of headstocks inside evoking the history of Béarn, some curious pieces of furniture and a family documentation, XVIIe with the XIXe siècle.
Outside, one put at the day a furnace, a well, and famous “the underground”, which, so often mythical in the old castles, exists indeed here: one walks on the top of his vault.
Religious heritage
