Charonia tritonis

The triton is a Mollusque Gastéropode Prosobranche Pectinibranche of big size and with long spiral shell, also called Charonia tritonis , which one finds in the hot and moderated seas. This shell is represented with the lips of the marine gods with whom it was used as horn and is used like such by seafaring nations (see also Horn of plenty).

Distribution

Commun run in the Mediterranean.

Anatomy and biology

The Mollusque S have a musculeux ventral foot, often cilié, which plays a part in the locomotion. They have a coat which wraps the dorsal visceral mass and which secretes the shell made up mainly of Carbonate of calcium. The shell of the majority of the Gastéropodes is dextral, i.e. its rolling up is done from left to right when one looks it by the top. The adults can reach an exceptional size from 25 to 30 cm.

Food

Carnivore - It nourishes molluscs, shellfish and starfishes.
