Charmed

Charmed is a American Televised series in 178 approximately 42 minutes episodes, created by Constance Mr. Burge and diffused between the October 7th 1998 and the May 21st 2006 on the network WB. In France, the series was diffused between the February 27th 1999 and the November 25th 2006 on M6 in first part of evening and within the framework of the trilogy of Saturday . With the Quebec, the series was diffused on VRAK.TV and in French-speaking Switzerland on TSR.

Synopsis

Produced by Aaron Spelling with which one must, inter alia, cruising has fun , Drôles ladies , Starsky & Hutch , Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place , this series puts in scene three sisters (Prue, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell) who, joined together after the death of their grandmother, discover that they are the downward ones of a long line of Sorcières. Each one develops a different capacity then: Prue handles telekinesis, Piper solidifies the people and/or the objects and Phoebe has premonitory visions. Linked by the Capacity of the Three, which enables them to multiply by ten the effect of their formulas, they are the most powerful witches of the world. The Halliwell sisters have the mission of overcoming the beings of the evil and of saving the innocent ones while trying to carry out a “normal” life.

In 2001, Paige Matthews, the half-sister of the three witches (girl of their mother and its being of Sam light), comes to reform the Capacity of the Three, broken after the tragic death of elder Prue.

The Halliwell Sisters

  • Prudence “Prue” Halliwell (October 28th 1970 - May 17th 2001): Prue is the elder one of the family, it had very quickly to deal with his/her little sisters following the death of their mother. She will have then adventures with Jason, Leslie and Dex before falling on the rare pearl, Coop with which she will have three little girls. Coop was in ridge Cupid sent to Phoebe by the founders. Phoebe believed that it was there to find a companion to him but she will découvra that he was this companion.

The shock will produce the explosion of the manor by carrying Phoebe, Paige and Christy, leaving only Piper and Billie which will try each one on their side to go up time. Billie will end up killing his/her sister while turning over a fireball against it whereas this one had tried to kill her because it had become demoniaque. The sisters will forgive him to have betrayed them. With the wire of time Billie will regain the confidence of the sisters, and will keep even their children of time to others. Billie will continue its fight against the evil, without forgetting of course to find the Love…

  • Christy Jenkins : Very powerful witch, endoctrinée by demons, it will handle her Billie sister to help it to destroy the capacities of the three. She has a capacity of telepathy as well as Pyrokinésie (to light remote fires) and has the capacity to detect the demons present or in approach. She will be killed by her sister whereas she tried to burn the Halliwell sisters (Billie will use its capacity of telekinesis to return the fireball sent by Christy, which will kill it).

Founders and beings of light

  • Gideon : Founder who created the school of magic, he is the director besides. He is the mentor and the friend of Léo, he is one of the rare founders to have supported Léo at the time of his marriage with Piper. But it has a share of shade and wants to seize Wyatt to kill it and to repair the error which because it was its birth estimates that this child is a too great threat for the good and the evil. Wyatt being the son of Halliwell and a being of light, it thus becomes powerful, too powerful with the eyes of Gideon. It is besides its attempt to kill it which failed to make Wyatt malefic. But fortunately, it is saved by his father, Léo, which kills Gidéon and loses then the reason.

  • Leo Wyatt : To be of light of the Halliwell sisters, it is made first of all pass for simple a " man with all faire". It will fall in love with Piper thereafter. Promotions of Leo will prove the existence of a supernatural hierarchy and it will have to juggle between family life and work. The relationship with Piper is the first of many conflicts between the Founders and the sisters. Léo was doctor in the army and married when he died during the 2nde World war. It is torn off in Piper in season 8 but is returned to him at the end of the season. After the oddment, he becomes professor at the School of Magic, and it is known that he will carry out against Piper part of Scrabble which he will gain.

  • Chris Perry Halliwell : to be of light which comes from the future to inform the Halliwell sisters that a demon will change Wyatt to be malefic about it. It dissimulates many secrecies but is full with good intentions. It proves to be the son of Piper and from Léo and thus the little brother of Wyatt, it comes from the future to save his family, unfortunately Gidéon will kill it because he interposed to save his Wyatt brother.

Other characters

  • Adhesive Turner : Adhesive is a powerful demon whose reputation as Balthazar is not any more to make. With Athame as arms with predilection, he praises himself to be able to kill any witch. Its primary mission was to kill the Halliwell sisters but fell in love with Phoebe with which it will marry. Later Cole will become the Source of the absolute Evil, destroyed, first once by the sisters, it will return from the Hells to reconquer its beloved, but this one will finish some for good with him in season 5. Despite everything Adhesive remains the first Love of Phoebe.

  • Andy Trudeau : Friend of childhood of the sisters and in love with Prue. It is the initial bond between the Halliwell sisters and the police force once it as well as learns from their activities the first subject of controversy between the normal life from the Trio and their life of Witch. The Rodriguez demon will kill Andy whereas it tries to protect the girls at the end of season 1. (Actor Ted King/Season 1)

  • Darryl Morris : Darryl is the associate of Andy and will be the bond between the police force and the sisters after the death of this one. It continues to dissimulate for them after having learned their secrecy and even after the events which will lead it to being practically killed by an lethal injection and this until his wife obliges it to move in another State.

  • Henry Mitchell : Police officer who became the friend of Paige then his boyfriend. After Paige to him is revealed its capacities it does not reject it and the proposal. They will marry some time later and will have binoculars and a son.

  • Coop : Cupid, which was sent at Phoebe so that this one does not give up has to find the love. They fall in love but Phoebe hesitates to give him its heart because it is afraid of the prohibited love. After Wyatt called Coop " Uncle Coop" , Chris and this one come from the future (following the loss of being able of Wyatt) will explain to Phoebe why Coop was not sent to find the love to him but to be this love. He will marry and have three girls.

  • Kira : Kira is the démoniaque prophetess who dreams to become human, it know the secrecy of the misadventures and could help the Halliwell sisters has to live happy. But before reaching that point, it is killed by Zankou which had taken the appearance of Phoebe not to be worried by the sisters.

  • In the United States, the pilot episode of the series entitled Something Wicca This Way Comes ( the book of the shades ) took down the record of the highest audience ever recorded for the beginning of a series on the American chain The WB. More than 7,7 million Americans were bewitched by the “charm (d)” of the Halliwell sisters on October 7th, 1998 (date of the first diffusion of Charmed in the United States). However, the record was beaten in 2001 by the pilot episode of Smallville which recorded 8,4 million televiewers. With nearly 4,8 million televiewers during his first diffusion in France in the Trilogy of Saturday on M6, Charmed did not miss its entry in the hexagon!

  • After this excellent starting, Charmed became the second programs more looked of The WB behind 7 at the house . Charmed exceeds even series like Buffy against the vampires and Dawson .

  • After the diffusion of the twelfth episode of the eighth season which is entitled Payback' S.A. Witch ( Hold-up ), Charmed became more the American long series with women for principal interpreters.

; The departure of Shannen Doherty

  • In 2000, whereas the audiences of Charmed were with most, the press revealed the existence of a competition growing between two of principal the stars of the series: Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano. It is during the turning of the third season that two heroins would have started to more be able to support itself. The situation became so tended that the producers have to make a choice between the two actresses. Indeed, the last episode of season 7 was diffused whereas the WB had still not announced if it renewed the series or not for a eighth and last season. Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Pink McGowan (which made a point of offering final exceptional to their fans), like million fans, interpreted this attitude like a lack of respect towards its followers, the production and its interpreters.

; Did you know?

  • the character of Phoebe Halliwell should have been interpreted by Lori Rom. It turned the episode controls original at the sides of Shannen Doherty and Holly Marie Combs, but it left the series for “personal reasons”. The producers then sought one replacing. Aaron Spelling immediately thought of Alyssa Milano with which it had already worked on Melrose Place . After a telephone call and the reading of script, it agreed to play the part of Phoebe. The pilot episode was then turned over. Afterwards, Aaron Spelling was pleased with the arrival of Alyssa, “true asset of charm”, according to him. It is not the only change which was operated with the whole commencement of the series. Shannen Doherty had at the beginning be selected to incarnate the role of Piper and Holly Marie Combs for that of Prue. By reading script, the two actresses decided by mutual agreement that an exchange of the roles would be preferable and the production was not opposed to this decision.

  • Although Charmed is held in the town of San Francisco, to the north of the California, the series was turned during its first six seasons with Canoga Park, suburbs residential in the North-West of Los Angeles. The studios of the series were then relocated with the studios Paramount, because of the end of the lease renting the preceding studios. The manor of Halliwell exists indeed, not in San Francisco as the series claims it but in Los Angeles.

  • the true name of the Halliwell sisters in original version is “the Charmed Ones”.

  • In the beginning, Brian Krause had auditioned for the role of Andy Trudeau (the inspector which leaves with Prue in the first season). Not having taken down the role, it retente its chance a few months later with the character of Léo Wyatt, but without too much believing in it, a hundred of other actors being in competition for the role. With its great surprise, it is retained. All is not gained yet, the character of Léo was supposed to appear only for two episodes. Fortunately, the scenario writers decided some differently and regularly made return Léo throughout the season until he becomes a recurring character.

  • At the commencement of the series, the producers asked Holly Marie Combs to wear a stuffed bra. They estimated that the young actress had the air handicapped beside Shannen Doherty and especially of Alyssa Milano. Holly thus accepted during several episodes but finding that ridiculous, it quickly decided to stop this cheating.

  • In 2002, Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs officially became producing of the series.

  • Following the diffusion of season 5, M6 decided to program of exclusiveness the first three new episodes in the following season. An experiment which the chain renewed thereafter during the diffusion of seasons 6 and 7.

  • There exist two versions different from the book of the shades: the original one with the rather poor contents and the bâclé design was useful for season 1. This version was then remanipulée, of the pages either were completely replaced or recreated (example: the formula of the Capacity of the Three, appears completely remade in the first episode of season 2). This version (a) was preserved to be enriched until the final one by the series.

  • the book of the shades also has its own lining (for the scenes of action where it would be " maltraité") in order not to be damaged.
