Charmauvillers

Charmauvillers is a common French, located in the department of the Doubs and the area Franche-Comté.

Geography

While coming from the road Damprichard after 7 km, one arrives at Charmauvillers by the collar of the Virgin (960 m), or since Goumois (7 km). From the village one discovers a superb landscape on the valley of Doubs and the chain of the Chasseral (1607 m) side Suisse.

A small way goes down at the edge of the Doubs, with the locality Goule , where a small bridge makes it possible to pass to Switzerland (1) to Noirmont. one can admire a beautiful small vault (1694) at the beginning of the Bief of Etoz , village disappeared but which was famous for its verrrery at the beginning of the 18th century.

(1) the automobile passage for Switzerland will be done preferably by Goumois which has a border post.

  • Goule and the legend of " the pot of parts of or": On the French side, one reaches with Goule by a small way which goes down from Charmauvillers on bank from Doubs. At the XIV ième century, a small hamlet there was located between the river and cliff and lived, probably, from the farming community and benefitted from the driving force of Doubs to actuate a mill with grain.

October 18th, 1356, the violent one seism who destroyed the town of Basle, made collapse cliff on the small hamlet which disappeared under enormous quantities from rocks. Those formed a kind of natural stopping on the river. A legend wants that a pot full with gold coins remained under the debris.

Today, a small bridge makes it possible to pass Suisse side in front of the building of the customs and to go up until Noirmont and Saint-Imier. On bank of Swiss Doubs side, a small bar-restaurant accommodates the tourists; it was (or it is still) the place of appointment of youth (Swiss and French) come to dance.

This water reserve forms a lake which feeds the powerplant of Goule in Switzerland.
