Charlottetown (the name wants to say town of Charlotte ) is a Canadian city and the capital of the province of the Island-of-Prince-Edouard with a population of 32.174 in 2007. In 1995 the city amalgamated with the communities of Sherwood, Parkdale, Hillsborough Park, West Royalty, and East Royalty.
The first colonists were French which founded the city in 1720 naming it Port-the-Joy . The majority of their descendants, of the Acadian , were expelled by the Britanniques in 1755 when they refused to lend oath of honesty to their new Masters.
The name was changed into 1768 according to Charlotte de Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of Georges III of the United Kingdom. Its growth was slow until the medium of the Dix-neuvième century when it became a shipyard. The conference of 1864 was a step towards the establishment of the confederation.
The Bridge of the Confederation form a permanent bond between the island and the continent.
