Synopsis

The US Enterprise has return with the US Antares, a small vessel of exploration. By traversing the planet Thasus, Antares discovered a young Humain boy named Charles Evans which was the only survivor of the crash landing of the vessel as of his/her parents. It was collected and raised by mysterious and old race, the Thasien S.
Evans is transferred on board Enterprise so that this one leads it on the colony Alpha V, or it still has of the family.
The Ramart captain and his navigator, Tom Nellis, seem very much in a hurry to leave as fast as possible, refusing even, on behalf of Kirk, a “Saurien Brandy”. One of the first and many mysteries which surround Charlie Evans.

Shortly after its departure, the Ramart Captain tries to warn Enterprise of a danger, but before it has time to speak, Antares is destroyed. A strange comment of Charlie at the time of this destruction lets predict bad omens.
With the foot of the wall, Charlie admits that it destroyed Antares because the crew was not “nice” with him.

When its capacities are known of all, Charlie Evans takes the control of Enterprise. He wants to go on the Colonie 5, but Kirk carries out the threat which he represents and does not hope to let it make.
With the paroxysm of the conflict, a vessel coming from Thasus appears. Thasiens had offered to Charlie Evans its immense capacities so that it can survive its accident but, which cannot withdraw to him, Thasiens concluded from there that Charlie could never carry out a normal life among his. They then decide to bring back it with them on Thasus, with the great despair of poor Charlie Evans which does not want to live in a cold world, sterile and private of love.

Production

  • the premises of Charlie X come from a history written in the beginning in March 1964 by Gene Roddenberry, when Star Trek was yet only one outline, under the title The Day Charlie Became God (literally: the day or Charlie became God ). When the series started production, he entrusted the writing of the scenario to Dorothy Catherine Fontana. With Gene L. Coon, Fontana is without the shade of a doubt one of the creative forces at the origin of the universe Star Trek . It was secretary Roddenberry the Gene before starting in the writing directly on the plate of Star Trek. It is Gene Roddenberry which advised to him to keep only the initial ones of its first name on the credits credit (D.C). Indeed at the time, it was very badly seen in the medium that a woman writes science fiction. The first version of the scenario was delivered on June 30th, 1966, the finalized version on July 5th. Turning took place mid-July. In original script, it is mentioned that the Antares was to appear on the screen. There remains also evasive on the card trick carried out by Charlie. It is just known as that it carries out a card trick which impresses Janice and the gallery, not that the photograph of Janice appears on the charts. During its production the episode borne the name of “ Charlie' S Law ” (literally the Law of Charlie ). This title will be preserved for the novelisation written by James Blish in 1967.
  • Charlie X remains one of the favorite episodes of Ira Steven Behr scenario writer and executive producer of DS9. So much so that in 1997, the producers of DS9 tried to engage Robert Walker Jr, the interpreter of Charles Evans, for an episode. Alas that Ci had just put a term at its career of actor and was not very hot to take again service.
