The town of Charlestown , localized in the middle of the county of Mayo, was built in the middle of last century, according to the initiative of the agent of Lord Dillon, Charles Strickland, neighbouring Bellaghy in the county of Sligo. The city currently has a population of 800 people.
The stone fort of Barnacahogue is located at approximately 5 Charlestown miles. It dates from the seventh or eighth century. These forts were the farms of the peasants who lived in Ireland approximately 2000 years ago, and the remainders of the stone-built houses and the wood hutes are often found inside the walls. The stone forts are particularly common in Ireland of the West where the stones were more abundant and where each square meter of ground was necessary for agriculture.
The well St Attracta' S is probably the most known relic of the ancient mission of St Attracta during the fifth century and is in Tample, with 2 miles of Charlestown. The abbey of Urlaur, in the parish of Kilmovee was built in 1434, but was destroyed by the Cromwelliens soldiers in 1654.
The abbey and the Lakes Urlaur are at 10 minutes in the car of Charlestown and the lake Talt, known for its trout fishing and its framework enchanter, is with 5 miles of the abbey of Benada, built in 1483 by Augustiniens.
