Charleston is the second city of the South Carolina, with the the United States. Founded in 1670 by the English, “Charles Towne” became at the century following an important commercial city and a great center of the Traite Blacks. It accommodated many huguenots. In April 1861, Charleston revolted against the Federal government with the bombardment of Fort Sumter, an event which started the American Civil War.
Charleston is noted today for the beauty of its gardens and its refined architecture. Tourism is important there (turns of gardens, historic buildings and properties of the colonial time such as Boone Hall and Middleton Gardens). Spoleto Festival the USA gathers each year in June of the European and American artists in the field of the music, the dance, the theater and the performing arts.
The city is the seat of several universities, of which the College of Charleston, 13th university created in the United States in 1770, and The Citadel, prestigious military academy. Three military bases are in the vicinity. Its population rises with: 100000 inhabitants (: 550000 with the suburbs).
It is in Charleston that in 1801 was founded the Scottish Rite old and accepted which is one of the maconnic most widespread rites in the world.
This city also plays a significant part in the theories of the plots: She would have been inhabited by Albert Pike, which would have made of it a major center of the Franc-maçonnerie.
Charleston has an airport ( Charleston Air Force Bases , code AITA: CHS).
Monuments
A ex- Aircraft carrier of US Navy, WORN CV-10 Yorktown , launched into 1943, is transformed into Musée in the port.
